GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Oct. 15, 2015) – Freshman goalkeeper Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene) made 15 saves as the Mercy College field hockey team suffered a 5-0 setback to No. 8 Adelphi University on Thursday afternoon at Motamed Field.

The Mavericks (6-6) see their two-game winning streak come to a halt, while the Panthers (10-3) have now won seven in a row.

Adelphi was led by Molly Cuevas who had a game-high two goals and two assists on a game-high 19 shots.

Mercy, playing their third ranked team of the season, faced a tall task in taking on a Panther squad that had won six in a row and was unbeaten at home.

The home team controlled play throughout, ending the contest with a 40-0 edge in shots and 16-1 advantage in penalty corners.

The Mavericks were able to keep Adelphi off the board for the first 22 minutes of action as Amell made six stops. However, the Panthers finally got on the board in the 23rd minute as Elizabeth Mercuri took a cross from Lena Pollich and beat the goalkeeper with a shot in the upper right to put Adelphi up 1-0.

Cuevas added back-to-back goals in the 29th and 31st minutes to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead at halftime. Amell helped limit the damage in the frame with ten saves in the half as Adelphi finished with 25 shots.

Kristen Bagley added a goal in the 42nd minute to make it 4-0 before Rachel Colvin added a goal in the 68th minute to conclude the scoring on the day.

Head Coach Kayte Kinsley and the Mavericks travel to South Carolina to take on Newberry on Sunday, October 18th at 11 a.m.
