Augustine Stops Four Shots as Women's Soccer Takes on LIU Post
Box Score BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 17, 2015) – Senior goalkeeper Nicole Augustine (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) made four saves as the Mercy College women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to LIU Post in an East Coast Conference (ECC) matchup on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Soccer Park.
The Mavericks (5-5-2, 3-3 ECC) have now dropped two in a row, while the Pioneers (10-2-2, 2-1-2 ECC) have won three in a row.
Senior Jessica DeLeon (Phoenix, Ariz./Paradise Valley CC) ended the contest with Mercy's lone shot on goal and finished with two shots overall. Sophomore Heidi Serna (West Covina, Calif./South Hills) added a pair of shots and junior Samantha Longo (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) recorded a shot.
LIU Post was led by Andrea Huntzinger who scored the game's lone goal in the 31st minute.
The contest featured limited scoring opportunities for either side with the two teams combining for only six shots on goal on the day.
The first shot of the day did not come until the 4th minute when a Susanne Vistnes shot was stopped by Augustine. The Mavericks recorded their first shot of the afternoon in the 5th minute on Longo's shot, but for the remainder of the half shots were difficult to come by for either team.
The Pioneers finally broke the scoreless tie in the 31st minute as Huntzinger finished off a give-and-go with Klara Berggren, firing the shot inside the far post to give LIU Post a 1-0 lead.
Just under three minutes after the goal DeLeon came back with Mercy's shot on goal, but goalkeeper Felicia Orderud made the stop to keep the Pioneers in front.
Serna closed the half with a pair of shots but the Mavericks could not find the equalizer and LIU Post headed into the intermission up 1-0.
After the two teams were even at 4-4 in shots in the first half, the Pioneers controlled the action in the second half with a 4-1 edge in shots. Augustine made three saves in the second half to keep Mercy in the game, but the Mavericks could not come up with the game-tying goal and LIU Post came away with the win.
Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks will look to get back in the win column, heading to Dowling College on Wednesday, October 21st for a 3 p.m. start time.
