Amell Makes 13 Stops as Field Hockey Plays at Newberry
Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. (Oct. 18, 2015) – Freshman goalkeeper Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene) made 13 saves as the Mercy College field hockey team fell to the Newberry College Wolves, 2-0, on Sunday morning at Setzler Field.
The Mavericks drop their second game in a row, falling to 6-7 overall with the loss. Newberry rises to 3-10 overall.
For the Mavericks, junior Jackie Ballin (Cupertino, Calif./Cupertino) and freshman Alicia Williams (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) each contributed a shot on goal. Despite the Mavericks seven penalty corners to the Wolves five, they were unable to score.
Meghan Smiga finished the game with seven shots, six of which were on goal. Kaycie Andrew added a game-high of eight shots for the Wolves. Goalkeepers Allison Davis and Dakota Elzy split their time evenly for the Wolves.
Amell was able to hold off the Wolves offense by making seven key saves in the first half. The freshman also made six saves in the second half to hold the Wolves to just two goals on 25 shots.
Smiga ignited the Wolves offense in the 28th minute when she scored unassisted off of a rebound from a penalty corner. The Wolves would score a second unanswered goal in the 47th minute when Andrew finished from a goalmouth scramble, assisted by Victoria Corriston.
Head Coach Kayte Kinsley and the Mavericks look to improve their record to .500 on Wednesday, Oct 21 at 4 p.m. when they will travel to Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven.
