Olson Finishes With Career-High-Tying 23 Kills as Volleyball Defeats New Rochelle in Straight Sets

(Oct. 20, 2015) – Powered by a career-high-tying 23 kills from freshman Peyton Olson (Albany, Ore./West Albany), the Mercy College volleyball team earned a 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-23) victory over The College of New Rochelle in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday night at the CNR Wellness Center.
The Mavericks (6-19) pick up their second win in the month of October and earn their fourth road win of the season, while the Blue Angels (16-8) have their three-match winning streak come to an end.
Olson hit a blistering .550 on the night and had three service aces, while sophomore Sa'Naya Johnson (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) contributed seven kills. Freshmen Toni Parente (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport) and Brooke Runge (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley Demarest) dished out 12 and 11 assists, respectively, and freshman Brianna Heffernan (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) added a team-high ten digs.
Leading New Rochelle was Fabiola Padilla Rio who ended the night with a double-double with 15 kills and 15 digs.
Mercy cruised their way to an opening set win as they hit .276 with 11 kills to earn a 25-16 first set win.
The second set of the night saw the Mavericks offense fire on all cylinders as they hit an efficient .469 with 16 kills and only one error as they took the frame, 25-22, to build a commanding 2-0 lead.
Another strong offensive performance in the third set gave Mercy the win as they finished with a .303 hitting percentage and 12 kills to earn a narrow 25-23 win to close out the match.
The Mavericks concluded the win with their best offensive performance of the season, hitting a season-best .351 on the night with 39 kills and 25 digs. The Blue Angels ended up with a .194 hitting percentage, 34 kills and 55 digs in a losing effort.
Head Coach Kelly Wengerter and the Mavericks look to build off the win as they head to ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday, October 24th for a 12 p.m. first serve.
