Ballin Records Sixth Goal of Season as Field Hockey Faces Southern Connecticut State
Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Oct. 21, 2015) – Despite a goal from junior Jackie Ballin (Cupertino, Calif./Cupertino), the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 5-1 decision to Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday afternoon at Jess Dow Field.
With the loss, the Mavericks fall to 6-8 overall and the Owls rise to 5-10. This is the first win for the Owls in the past four games.
Offensively, the Mavericks ripped a total of 12 shots throughout the contest, increasing their shots from three the first half to a total of nine in the second half. Ballin finished with a team-high five shots, while junior Jen Wandle (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) had one defensive save.
Both the Mavericks and the Owls made goalie subs during the contest. For the Mavericks, freshman starter Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene) played the first 49 minutes and finished the game with 10 saves. After a goalie sub in the second half, freshman Cheradyn Pettit (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer) came on and made four saves. For the Owls, Audrey Dolloff got the start and finished with four saves before giving way to Kelli McCombs who ended the day with a total of three saves.
Colleen Murphy scored her first of three goals for Southern Connecticut at the 6:52 mark with an assist from Alicia Jackson. Zoe Fanolis contributed the second goal of the game at 28:43 with a blast from the top of the circle, assisted from Vienna Pallisco during a penalty corner. Assisted by Fanolis, Murphy would score her second goal of the game on a low shot in the inside right post with just 27 seconds left in the first half.
In the second half, Murphy scored her third goal of the game at 46:21, after tipping the ball in through the goalkeeper's legs off of a pass from Bailey McGinnis. Pallisco scored the Owls fifth and final goal of the game at 49:24 off a penalty corner.
It wasn't until 51:54 that Ballin would put the Mavericks on the board. Ballin tipped the ball in off of a pass from junior Vanessa Soler (Port Monmouth, N.J./Middletown North) in front of the Owls goalie.
Southern Connecticut capped off the day with a 31-12 edge in shots and a 12-7 advantage in penalty corners to help secure the win.
Head Coach Kayte Kinsley and the Mavericks will look to bounce back as they travel to Dowling on Wednesday, October 28th for a 4 p.m. start.
