Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 24, 2015) – Led by goals from sophomores Alyssa Iannuzzi (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) and Alexandra Modlinski (Highland Mills, N.Y./Cornwall), the Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 2-0 shutout win on Senior Day over East Coast Conference (ECC) foe Queens College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
In a ceremony prior to the game, head coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mercy athletic department recognized the careers of seniors Nicole Augustine (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston), Dawn Hickey (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot), Jessica DeLeon (Phoenix, Ariz./Paradise Valley CC), Karina Ramirez (Woodland Hills, Calif./Pierce College), Ashley Johnson (Phoenix, Ariz./Paradise Valley CC) Savannah Campana (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park Memorial) and Katie Kokis (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport).
The Mavericks (7-5-2, 5-3-0 ECC) pick up their second straight win and are currently third in the conference standings with one league game to play, while the Knights (4-8-2, 2-4-1 ECC) have now dropped four games in a row.
DeLeon ended the contest with a team-high three shots on goal, while freshman Haley Noble (Torrance, Calif./Torrance) chipped in two shots on goal and an assist. Sophomore Heidi Serna (West Covina, Calif./South Hills) also added an assist and redshirt freshman Ileen Mejia (Whittier, Calif./La Mirada) and freshman Kendall Wright (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) recorded the Mavericks other shots on goal. Augustine earned her fourth shutout win of the year and improves to 5-5-1 in net.
Queens was led by Nicolette Scrozzo who finished with a shot, while goalkeeper Megan Deak made seven saves in a losing effort.
Mercy dominated play throughout as they held an 18-1 edge in shots on the afternoon, but the pesky Knights kept the Mavericks off the board until the 36th minute.
The scoring drought ended when Serna set up to take a corner kick and fired the ball across the box where Iannuzzi deflected it in the left side of the net for her second of the year to put Mercy up 1-0.
The Mavericks headed into the intermission up 1-0 with a 10-1 advantage in shots and took four corners compared to zero for the visitors.
The second stanza saw Mercy maintain possession of the ball in Queens' end of the field for the entire half. Mercy would add to their lead as Noble fed a cross from the left side of the field to Modlinski who tapped the ball into the back of the net to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead. Mercy cruised the rest of the way and came away with a Senior Day win.
Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks will step out of conference play when they take on Philadelphia University on Wednesday, October 28th at 4 p.m.
