Olson Slams Home Match-High 15 Kills as Volleyball Plays at Roberts Wesleyan
Box Score ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Oct. 24, 2015) – Despite a match-high 15 kills from freshman Peyton Olson (Albany, Ore./West Albany), the Mercy College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (23-25, 19-25, 19-25) decision to Roberts Wesleyan College in an East Coast Conference (ECC) tilt on Saturday afternoon at Voller Athletic Center.
The Mavericks (6-20, 1-8 ECC) were unable to build off their win at New Rochelle on Tuesday, while the Redhawks (2-17, 2-8 ECC) snap a ten-match losing streak with the win.
Olson nearly recorded a double-double, also finishing with eight digs, while freshman Brooke Runge (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley Demarest) added 30 assists and six digs. Fellow freshman Brianna Heffernan (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) chipped in a match-high 17 digs and sophomore Sa'Naya Johnson (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) supplied seven kills to the Mercy offense.
Leading Roberts Wesleyan was Courtney Taylor who finished with a double-double by way of 13 kills and 11 digs, hitting .500 on the day.
The opening set of the day saw the Mavericks lead most of the way, taking a 16-14 lead following a Redhawks service error. Roberts Wesleyan fought back with a 6-0 run that gave them their first lead of the set at 20-16. Mercy did not back down and came right back with a 7-2 run of their own that gave themselves a 23-22 late in the frame. However, the home team bounced back with three straight points to close out the set and take a 1-0 lead.
The Mavericks got off to another strong start in the second set as they built a 13-11 lead midway through the set. With the set tied at 15-15, the Redhawks rattled off four straight points to take a 19-15 lead and finished off the set by scoring six of the next ten points to build a commanding 2-0 lead.
Mercy looked to extend the match as they got off to another 13-11 lead in the third set following a Danielle Sarasky (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) kill. As was the case in the first two sets the home team had an answer, following with a 10-2 run to take a 21-15 lead. Roberts Wesleyan held on the rest of the way to take the set and match.
The Mavericks hit .160 on the day with 39 kills and 46 digs, while the Redhawks finished with a .282 hitting percentage, 42 kills and 57 digs.
