Gardner and Sands Record Shots as Field Hockey Plays at Dowling
Box Score SHIRLEY, N.Y. (Oct. 28, 2015) – Senior Maggie Gardner (Mohawk, N.Y./Mohawk) and sophomore Kimberly Sands (Bethel, Conn./Immaculate) each recorded a shot as the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a 5-0 decision to Dowling College on Wednesday afternoon at Golden Lions Field.
The Mavericks (6-9) split the season series with the Golden Lions (5-11) who snapped a three-game losing streak with the win.
Sands recorded Mercy's lone shot on goal during the game, while freshman goalkeeper Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene) made three saves to earn the loss.
Dowling used a balanced attack with five different scorers, while goalkeeper Ariana Ovadia made the start and played the first half to pick up the win.
The home team dominated the action throughout, maintaining a 17-2 edge in shots and 14-6 advantage in penalty corners on the day.
The Golden Lions came out as the aggressors early with the first four shots before Zoe Norton set up for a penalty corner. Summer Carson took the pass from Norton off the corner and put in the back of the cage to give Dowling a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute.
Sands responded with a shot on goal in the 22nd minute but Ovadia made the stop to keep it 1-0. Less than a minute later Sarah Shams-Kollar connected on a penalty stroke to build the Golden Lions lead to 2-0 in the 23rd minute.
Norton ended the scoring in the first half as she took a feed from Amanda DeGennaro and finished it off to put Dowling up 3-0 heading into halftime.
Ann Marie Skula added a goal for the home team in the 53rd minute off a breakaway to make it 4-0 before Justine DeLuca concluded the scoring with a tally in the 60th minute.
Head Coach Kayte Kinsley and the Mavericks conclude their 2015 season with a road tilt against American International on Saturday, October 31st at 6 p.m.
