Three Score as Women's Soccer Earns 3-1 Victory Over NYIT in ECC Matchup
Box Score OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Oct. 7, 2015) – Led by goals from seniors Ashley Johnson (Phoenix, Ariz./Paradise Valley CC) and Dawn Hickey (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) and sophomore Alyssa Iannuzzi (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa), the Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 3-1 victory over East Coast Conference (ECC) opponent NYIT on Wednesday afternoon at President's Stadium.
The Mavericks (4-3-2, 2-2-0 ECC) level their record in conference play with the win, while the Bears (4-5-1, 0-4-0 ECC) remain winless in ECC competition.
Johnson, Hickey and Iannuzzi all picked up their first goals of the season, while freshmen Rebecca Conway (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) and Haley Noble (Torrance, Calif./Torrance) each contributed an assist. Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Price (Goodyear, Ariz./Millennium) made her second consecutive start and made five saves in picking up the win to improve to 2-0-1 on the year.
Dina Simonian recorded the lone goal of the day for NYIT, while goalkeeper Brianna Bollettieri made six saves in a losing effort.
The opening half of the contest saw the Mavericks maintain an 8-3 edge in shots, but Bollettieri and Price combined for seven saves in the frame to keep the game scoreless heading into halftime.
Mercy came out of the intermission as Johnson ended the scoreless drought in the 50th minute off a feed from Conway to make it 1-0 Mavericks. The Bears responded with a shot on goal less than a minute later, but Price came up with the save on a Taylor Casey shot to keep Mercy ahead.
Iannuzzi got the Mavericks an insurance goal in the 55th minute as she followed up a Jessica DeLeon (Phoenix, Ariz./Paradise Valley CC) shot that hit the crossbar and fired it in the back of the net to put Mercy up 2-0.
The Mavericks kept the pedal to the metal as Hickey struck less than a minute later off an assist from Noble to give Mercy a comfortable 3-0 lead. NYIT got on the board in the 86th minute to make it 3-1, but it came too late as the Mavericks held on for the victory.
Mercy ended the contest with a 20-7 advantage in shots, including a 12-4 margin in the second half to help seal the win.
Head Coach Jonathan Feinstein and the Mavericks are back in action this Saturday, October 10th as they host St. Thomas Aquinas at 12 p.m.
