Four Mavericks Score as Field Hockey Defeats St. Thomas Aquinas, 4-0
Box Score SPARKILL, N.Y. (Oct. 7, 2015) – Four different Mavericks scored as the Mercy College field hockey team tied the school record for wins in a season with a 4-0 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas College on Wednesday afternoon at Spartan Field.
The Mavericks (5-5) are now tied with the 2013 team for the most wins in program history, while the Spartans (1-8) have dropped four in a row.
Mercy received goals from freshmen Kayly Bryan (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point), Alana Costantini (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) and Alicia Williams (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) who all recorded their first collegiate goals, while graduate student Giana Magosin (Atlantic City, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) chipped in her second of the year. Sophomore Kimberly Sands (Bethel, Conn./Immaculate) and junior Vanessa Soler (Port Monmouth, N.J./Middletown North) finished with assists and freshmen goalkeepers Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene) and Cheradyn Pettit (Colorado Springs, Colo./Lewis Palmer) each stopped four shots to preserve the Mavericks second shutout of the year.
St. Thomas Aquinas received a team-high three shots on goal from Jacqueline Dowling and goalkeeper Nicole Amerling made nine saves in earning the loss.
In the prior meeting between the two teams on September 19th, Mercy came away with a 3-2 double-overtime win at home over the Spartans. However, today the Mavericks would not need late game heroics as they pounced all over St. Thomas Aquinas from the beginning.
Mercy came out of the gate with the first two shots on goal as Sands forced Amerling to make a pair of stops. The Spartans ensued with three straight shots later in the frame but Amell stepped up with three straight saves to keep the game scoreless.
The contest did not remain scoreless for long after as Williams took a pass from Sands and found the back of the cage to put the Mavericks up 1-0 in the 15th minute.
Mercy came back looking for more but Amerling continued to make stops to keep it 1-0. Bryan changed that in the 28th minute as she received a ball from Soler and put it past the goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
The score remained 2-0 in favor of the Mavericks as the two teams headed to halftime with Mercy holding a 9-5 edge in shots and an 11-6 advantage in penalty corners.
The Mavericks wasted little time in getting on the board in the second half as Costantini connected on a penalty stroke goal in the 39th minute to give Mercy a 3-0 lead.
Magosin followed that up with a goal of her own in the 41st minute off an assist by Williams to give the Mavericks a comfortable 4-0 lead and they held on for the shutout win.
Mercy ended the contest outshooting St. Thomas Aquinas 15-9 and maintaining an 18-10 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Kayte Kinsley and the Mavericks will look to move back over .500 as they host Saint Michael's on Sunday, October 11th at 1 p.m.
