NEWARK, Del. (Nov. 13, 2015) – Despite a double-double from senior Deasia Goodson (Freeport, N.Y./SUNYIT) and a career-high 12 points from sophomore DaMonae Hargrove (White Plains, N.Y./Maria Regina), the Mercy College women's basketball team opened up its 2015-16 season with a 73-55 loss to Wilmington University on Friday night.

The Mavericks (0-1) fail to beat the Wildcats (1-0) for the second year in a row after defeating them on November 22nd of last year in Dobbs Ferry.

Goodson ended the night with 15 points and 15 rebounds on 5-of-11 shooting, while Hargrove shot an impressive 5-of-8 from the field in 15 minutes of action. Senior Tatiana Parish (Los Angeles, Calif./Mt. San Antonio CC) rounded out three scoring in double figures with 10 points.

Wilmington was paced by Emma Matthews who had a game-high 17 points to go along with six boards.

On a cold-shooting night with both teams shooting under 40 percent on the night, the Mavericks got out to an early lead as they built a 13-10 advantage with 1:24 left in the first quarter on a freshman Chi-la Bady (Valley Stream, N.Y./Francis Lewis) free throw.

A Matthews trifecta evened up the score at 13-13 before four points from Goodson in the final 50 seconds of the quarter helped send the Mavericks to a 17-15 lead after one quarter of play.

The second quarter saw Mercy build a three-point lead again as sophomore Latisha Clark (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) connected on a layup to put the Mavericks up 22-19 with 8:49 left before halftime. The two teams would trade points the rest of the half and headed into the break tied at 29-29.

The opening half saw Mercy shoot 29.0 percent, while the hosts connected on 34.3 percent of their attempts in a low-scoring first half.

The Wildcats came out of the locker rooms on fire to start the second half as they outscored the Mavericks 18-6 in the period to take a 47-35 lead after three quarters of play.

Wilmington opened up the final quarter with the first points on a Zameria Jones layup before Goodson responded with a layup of her own to make it 49-37 in favor of the Wildcats with 9:39 remaining. However, Wilmington ensued with an 18-8 run over the next five minutes to take their largest lead of the game at 67-45 with 4:14 left and led the rest of the way to earn the win.

The Mavericks capped off the night shooting 28.6 percent from the floor and held a 54-48 advantage on the glass, while the Wildcats shot 38.7 percent and held a 24-14 edge in points off turnovers.

Head Coach Rashidi Aikens and the Mavericks will look to bounce back as they face Bloomfield tomorrow at Wilmington University at 4 p.m.
