Goodson and Perez Pour in 11 Points Apiece as Women's Basketball Takes on Bloomfield
Box Score NEWARK, Del. (Nov. 14, 2015) – Senior Deasia Goodson (Freeport, N.Y./SUNYIT) and freshman Cynthia Perez (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) each scored a team-high 11 points as the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 78-49 decision to Bloomfield College in a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at the Wilmington University Athletics Complex.
The Mavericks (0-2) drop both ends of their season-opening road trip, while the Bears (1-1) salvage a split in their two games at the CACC-ECC Conference Challenge.
Goodson scores in double figures for the second consecutive game and added six rebounds and five blocks. Perez finished with a career high in points on a strong 4-of-5 shooting in 14 minutes of action, while fellow freshman Chi-la Bady (Valley Stream, N.Y./Francis Lewis) poured in a career-high 10 points with five rebounds and four assists.
Bloomfield was paced by Jahniece Jaffe who posted a game-high 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting from downtown.
Mercy faced a tall task in taking on a Bears squad that won 17 games a year ago and was picked to finish first in the North Division of the CACC in the Preseason Coaches' Poll.
Bady opened up the scoring on the day with a layup at the 9:41 mark of the first quarter to give the Mavericks an early 2-0 lead. Bloomfield responded with the next seven points of the period to take a 7-2 advantage. Mercy got within two, 9-7, at the 2:19 mark following a Perez layup, but a 7-0 run by the Bears to close out the quarter gave them a 19-7 advantage after one.
Back-to-back trifectas from Bady and junior Paxton Reddington (Holmdel, N.J./Brookdale CC) cut the Bloomfield lead to 19-13 with 8:30 left before half. The Bears came back with five unanswered to up the lead back up to double figures, 24-13, with 7:17 showing on the clock. Mercy continued to battle and cut the deficit to eight following a pair of Goodson free throws at the 6:16 mark, but Bloomfield ended the half on an 11-6 run to take a 35-22 lead into halftime.
The first half saw both teams struggle to shoot the ball as the Mavericks shot 29.4 percent and the Bears hit 34.1 percent of their attempts. Bloomfield was able to build the lead in large part to a 15-0 advantage on the offensive glass which led to 24 more shot attempts than Mercy.
A Reddington triple at the 7:53 mark of the third quarter cut the deficit to 11, 38-27, but the Bears ensued with an 11-2 run to up the lead to 20, 49-29, with 5:20 left in the third. A Goodson jumper with 3:46 remaining in the third quarter trimmed the Bloomfield lead to 15, 49-34. However, the Bears capped off the frame on a 9-5 run to put the lead back to 20, 58-38, after three quarters.
Bloomfield coasted in the final quarter as they outscored the Mavericks 20-11 in the period, building the lead to as many as 32 to secure the win.
Mercy concluded the afternoon shooting 35.7 percent, while Bloomfield connected at a 37.7 percent clip. The Bears went 12-of-33 from downtown, while the Mavericks hit 6-of-16 from beyond the arc. Bloomfield controlled the boards with a 53-29 edge, including a 24-1 margin on the offensive glass which led to a 19-0 advantage in second chance points. The Bears also turned 28 Mercy turnovers into a 32-19 edge in points off turnovers as Bloomfield committed 19 turnovers of their own.
Head Coach Rashidi Aikens will head back to New York to face Dominican College on the road on Saturday, November 21st at 1 p.m.
