Three Mavericks Score in Double Figures as Women's Basketball Faces Dominican
Box Score ORANGEBURG, N.Y. (Nov. 21, 2015) - Three Mavericks scored in double figures as the Mercy College women's basketball team fell, 75-54, to Dominican College on Saturday afternoon at the Hennessy Center.
The Mavericks (0-3) have now lost the first three games of their season, while the Chargers (2-2) have won their last two games.
Sophomore Casey Sullivan (East Lyme, Conn./Saint Bernard) scored in double figures for the first time this season, scoring a game-high 18 points, and also contributing five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Sullivan ended the game shooting 50 percent (5-of-10) from the three-point line.
For the second consecutive game, freshman Chi-la Bady (Valley Stream, N.Y./Francis Lewis) scored ten points for the Mavericks. All ten of Bady's points were from the free throw line, as she shot an impressive 83.3 percent (10-of-12). Bady also had a team-high seven assists and four steals. Sophomore Latisha Clark (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) contributed ten points and a team high nine rebounds for the Mavericks.
The Chargers had four double-digit scorers in the contest. Deja Gabbidon led the way with a team high 16 points and added a team high nine rebounds. Lisa Bouffard had a total of 15 points and four rebounds for the night.
Sullivan opened the game scoring on a layup just twelve seconds into the contest to give Mercy the lead. Bady gave the Mavericks their final lead of the game at 8:21 when she was sent to the line and sunk both shots to give the Mavericks a 6-5 lead. The Chargers would follow with a 20-5 run to close out the quarter and build a 25-11 advantage after one.
The second quarter saw Sullivan nail a trifecta to get Mercy within 11, 25-14. Dominican came back with a layup at the 9:14 mark before a Bady free throw and Clark layup cut the deficit to ten, 27-17, with 7:10 left before half. That would be the closest the Mavericks would get as the Chargers followed on a 10-3 run to put the lead back up to 17, 37-20, with 2:24 left in first half. Sullivan nailed a trifecta with seven seconds left in the frame to send Mercy into the locker rooms down 37-23.
Dominican outshot the Mavericks 41.0 percent to 32.0 percent in the opening stanza and held a 21-18 edge on the glass.
The Chargers controlled the action in the second half, building their lead to as many as 25 to emerge victorious.
Dominican ended the afternoon shooting 45.6 percent from the field compared to 31.3 percent for the Mavericks. The Chargers finished with a 38-33 edge on the boards and held a 27-15 advantage in points off turnovers.
Head Coach Rashidi Aikens and the Mavericks will face Felician University on Sunday Nov. 22 at 3 p.m. at the 3rd Annual Regina Rivera Memorial Tournament held in Orangeburg, N.Y.
