Olson Smacks Team-High Seven Kills as Volleyball Faces NYIT on Senior Night
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Nov. 9, 2015) – Despite a team-high seven kills and eight digs from freshman Peyton Olson (Albany, Ore./West Albany), the Mercy College volleyball team dropped a, 3-0 (22-25, 10-25, 19-25) Senior Night decision to NYIT on Monday night at Mercy Gymnasium.
In a ceremony prior to the game, head coach Kelly Wengerter and the Mercy athletic department recognized the career of senior Abigail Foti (Bedford, N.H./Bedford).
The Mavericks (7-25, 2-13 ECC) fail to build off their win on Thursday, while the Bears (22-5, 10-4 ECC) have won three in a row.
Also contributing for Mercy was sophomore Sa'Naya Johnson (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) who had five kills and two digs, while freshman Brooke Runge (Closter, N.J./Northern Valley Demarest) chipped in nine assists and five digs. Junior Andrea Velasco (Whittier, Calif./Rio Hondo College) added eight digs and Foti had a kill and three digs in her final home match as a Maverick.
Lindsay Abrams led NYIT with a match-high 11 kills on .500 hitting.
The Mavericks looked to use the momentum from their comeback win on Thursday and they started off strong in the opening set, taking a 20-18 lead late in the frame. However, the visitors came back with four straight to regain the lead at 22-20. A Bears attack error cut the lead to 22-21, but NYIT responded with three of the next four points to close out the set and take a 1-0 lead.
The second set was dominated by the Bears as they jumped out to a 10-0 lead and did not look back as they cruised to a 2-0 advantage.
The final set of the night saw NYIT get off to another strong start with a 13-2 lead, but the Mavericks would not go down easily in their final contest in front of the home crowd as they ensued with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 13-10. The Bears followed with an 8-3 run of their own to take a 21-13 advantage and held on to close out the match.
Mercy ended the match hitting .010 with 19 kills and 40 digs, while NYIT concluded the night hitting .184 with 42 kills and 53 digs.
Head Coach Kelly Wengerter and the Mavericks conclude their 2015 season on the road against LIU Post on Thursday, November 12th at 7 p.m.
