The last time these two teams met a year ago, the Mavericks defeated the Knights 63-49. The Mavericks were looking to repeat history as Goodson was the first to score in the game, finishing a layup at the 9:38 mark, followed by a made free-throw by freshman Chi-la Bady (Valley Stream, N.Y./Francis Lewis). The Knights would then score 15 unanswered points to put them on the board at 15-3. The first quarter would come to an end with the Mavericks trailing 26-11.

Goodson would once again be the first to score after half-time by making a lay-up at the 8:32 mark. Goodson took over the third quarter, where she recorded ten of her 22 points. The Mavericks fought hard all quarter, but it would be the Mercy defense that would force a turnover with 1:36 remaining in the quarter to bring the Mavericks the closest they would come all game. Copeland capitalized on the turnover and responded with a made layup at the 1:23 mark to make the score 51-41. With just 0:05 on the clock, Goodson would convert a three point play after being fouled on a layup and making both the shot and the free throw to follow.
