Goodson Collects Double-Double as Women's Basketball Travels to Roberts Wesleyan
Box Score ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Feb. 20, 2015)- Junior Deasia Goodson (Freeport, N.Y./SUNYIT) collected a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds as the Mercy College women's basketball team fell to the Redhawks of Roberts Wesleyan College, 71-58 on Friday evening.
The Redhawks improve to 17-5 overall and 12-4 in the East Coast Conference, while the Mavericks fall to 8-16 overall and 2-15 in the ECC.
Mercy jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the opening minute on a layup by Goodson and a triple by freshman Casey Sullivan (East Lyme, Conn. / Saint Bernard). The Redhawks were ice cold in the first 10 minutes, shooting 11.1% from the field and holding star player Marissa Sell scoreless. Mercy continued to feed Goodson on the low block, as she scored 10 points in the opening stanza and helped the Mavericks take their largest lead of the game at 16-7 with 09:59 remaining.
Mercy wouldn't hold the advantage for long as Roberts Wesleyan closed out the half on a 29-4 run, that give the Redhawks a 41-24 lead at intermission. Necedah James led all scorers with 13 points, including shooting 3-for-4 from behind the arc.
In the second half, Mercy opened the latter 20 on an 8-2 run as seniors Tanayzha Augustine (Poughkeepsie, N.Y. / Poughkeepsie) and Brandone Roberts (Jessup, Md./Nyack College) both scored four points apiece, to cut the Redhawks lead to 43-31 with 16:06 remaining. Wesleyan would hold the lead for the remainder of the game, despite the Mavericks cutting the lead to 10 points during the latter stages of game.
Augustine finished with 15 points and nine rebounds, while junior Erin Copeland (Kansas City, Kan. / Univ. of Illinois-Springfield) finished with eight points, six assists and five rebounds. James led all scorers with 20 points, including connecting on four triples. Sell finished 13 points and 18 rebounds, as she become the first player in RWC history score 1,000 points and grab 1,000 rebounds.
Head Coach Rashidi Aikens and the Mavericks return to action tomorrow, Saturday Feb. 21th, as they travel to Amherst, N.Y. to face the Wildcats of Daemen College at 2:00 p.m.
