Three Starters Score in Double Figures as Women's Basketball Hosts STAC on Senior Night

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 24, 2015)- Three starters scored in double-figures, led by senior Brandone Roberts (Jessup, Md. /Nyack College) who finished with a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds, as the Mercy College women's basketball team fell to the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College, 55-53 on senior night.  

Freshman Jenna Erickson led the Spartans with 19 points and five rebounds as they improve to 13-15 overall and 9-10 in the East Coast Conference. Senior Tanayzha Augustine (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Poughkeepsie) nearly collected a double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds as the Mavericks fell to 8-18 overall and 2-17 in the ECC.

Erickson connected on three free-throws to give the Spartans a 49-45 lead with just over three minutes remaining. Mercy responded with a 6-0 run, that was capped off by an Augustine layup, giving the Mavericks a 51-49 advantage with 1:46 remaining.

STAC answered on the other end, as Kristen Olsen connected on a triple to give the Spartans a 52-51 lead and forced the Mavericks to burn its final timeout. After a missed jumper by Roberts, STAC was able to run the clock down to 12 seconds, where Erickson knocked down two free throws to extend their lead to 54-51.

Augustine drove the length of the floor and made a layup with four second remaining, that cut the STAC lead to just one at 54-53. Erickson sealed the game by making the frontend of the one-on-one and the last second half court shot by junior Briana Rhett (New Rochelle, N.Y. / Sullivan County CC) didn't connect, allowing the Spartans got out of Dobbs Ferry with the victory.

Junior Deasia Goodson (Freeport, N.Y./SUNYIT) finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and four blocks. Before the game, Head Coach Rashidi Aikens and the women's basketball coaching staff recognized Augustine, Roberts and senior Riana Ward (Bronx, N.Y. / Erie CC) for their hard work and dedication.

The Mavericks return to action on Thursday, Feb. 26th, as they will travel to the nation's capital to face the Firebirds of the University of the District of Columbia at 7:00 p.m.
