Seven Score as Men's Lacrosse Earns 9-8 Victory Over Saint Rose

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 25, 2015) – Led by seven different Mavericks recording a goal, the No. 13 Mercy College men's lacrosse team defeated the College of Saint Rose, 9-8, on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (2-0) are now 2-0 for the third straight year under Head Coach Jordan Levine, while the Golden Knights (0-1) open their 2015 season with a loss.

Senior Jesse Wood (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) finished with a game-high-tying four points on a goal and three assists on four shots, while sophomore Nick Wilcox (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) and junior Robert Rossi (North Massapequa, N.Y./Adelphi) each paced the team with two goals apiece. Junior Kyle Stockton (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) and senior Owen Valance (Glen Cove, N.Y./McDaniel College) tallied a goal as did senior Zack Haun (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca East Senior) and graduate student Kevin Glueckert (Bethpage, N.Y./Albany).

Rossi and Stockton led the team with a game-high eight shots and Glueckert picked up a game-high six groundballs and went 15-of-20 in the faceoff circle. Junior A.J. Pellati (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) made three saves in improving to 2-0 in net.

Saint Rose was led by Kevin Fleming who put up a game-high three goals and added an assist.

As they did in their season opener on Saturday, the Mavericks got off to a quick start as they scored the first two goals of the contest to take a 2-0 lead at the 8:18 mark of the first quarter as Rossi and Wood found the back of the net. However, the guests would respond with three goals in just under three minutes to take a 3-2 lead at the 2:01 mark and headed into the second quarter up one.

Mercy opened the scoring in the second quarter with a goal at the 13:14 mark by Haun off a feed Wood to even the score up at 3-3. The Mavericks regained the lead with 8:23 left before halftime as Rossi netted his fourth goal of the season to put Mercy up 4-3.

The Golden Knights came back with a pair of goals to take a 5-4 advantage with just under two minutes left before intermission. Mercy closed the half scoring two goals in just over a minute to head into the break up 6-5. Valance found the net with 1:08 showing on the clock for his first of the season and Stockton notched his fifth on a man-up goal with 37 seconds left.

The third quarter saw Wilcox score a couple of goals for the Mavericks to give Mercy an 8-5 lead going into the final frame.

The guests would not go down quietly in the final period as they crept closer with a goal at the 13:12 mark and tallied another with 8:51 remaining to get within one, 8-7, with 8:51 on the clock. The Mavericks got the insurance goal they needed less than a minute later as Gluckert scored his first of the season off a pass from Wood to put Mercy back up by two, 9-7, with just over eight minutes left.

The Mavericks defense held Saint Rose scoreless for the next six minutes before the Golden Knights made things interesting with 2:19 left in regulation when Fleming picked up his third goal of the game to make it 9-8. Mercy's defense would hold off the Saint Rose attack in the final two minutes to preserve the win.

Mercy ended the day with a 37-20 edge in shots and 39-23 advantage in groundballs. The Mavericks also went a perfect 18-for-18 in clear attempts and won 15-of-20 faceoffs.

Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks return to action on Saturday, February 28th at 1 p.m. as they travel to Seton Hill.
