Augustine Surpasses 500 Rebounds as Women's Basketball Travels to No. 22 UDC
Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. (Feb. 26, 2015)- Senior Tanayzha Augustine (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./ Poughkeepsie) surpassed 500 career rebounds, as she grabbed 15 boards and added 19 points in the 87-74 loss to the Firebirds of the University of the District of Columbia in the nation's capital this evening.
Shakena Williams scored 21 points, as she connected on six triples to help the Firebirds improve to 24-3 overall and 17-2 in the East Coast Conference. Senior Brandone Roberts (Jessup, Md. / Nyack College) led all scorers with 22 points as the Mavericks fall to 8-19 overall and 2-18 in the ECC.
The three point line and the turnovers proved to be the difference in the game as UDC outshot Mercy 44.4% to 35.7% from behind the arc and the Firebirds turned 21 Mavericks turnovers into 27 points. Despite those numbers, Mercy did edge UDC on the glass, 39-29.
The Firebirds went wire-to-wire in the victory as they jumped all over the Mavericks early. Augustine made back-to-back buckets that cut the UDC lead to 10-6, but the Firebirds would respond with a 35-10 run to end the first half. UDC torched the nets in the first half, shooting 51.7% from the field and 54.5% from the three point line.
The second half was much better for the Mavericks as they outscored the Firebirds 51-40, making final score much more respectable. Augustine and Roberts combined for 23 points in the second half, while juniors Erin Copeland (Kansas City, Kan. /Univ. of Springfield-Illinois) and Deasia Goodson (Freeport, N.Y./ SUNYIT) combined for 17 points in the second stanza.
Head Coach Rashidi Aikens and the Mavericks return to action on Monday Mar. 2nd, as they will close out the 2014- 15 season against the Blue Angels of the College of New Rochelle at 7:00 p.m.
