CLERMONT, Fla. (Mar. 12, 2015) – Senior Jackie Couillard (Wolcott, Conn./Wolcott) went 1-for-3 with an RBI as the Mercy College softball team suffered a 5-1 setback to Wayne State (Neb.) on Thursday afternoon.

The first game of the day against Ferris State was cancelled.

The Mavericks fall to 0-9, while the Wildcats improve to 10-2.

Couillard got Mercy on the board first in the bottom of the first inning as she drove home junior Amanda Gardiner (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) on an RBI single to center field to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead after one.

The lead would be brief as Wayne State came right back in the top of the second with a run off Mercy starter sophomore Holly Pundick (Whiterock, B.C./Jefferson College) to even up the score at 1-1.

The score remained tied at 1-1 until the fifth inning when the Wildcats took the lead off a pair of runs in the frame, using a lead-off triple and RBI double to do the damage.

The Mavericks went down in order in their half of the fifth before Wayne State tacked on a pair of insurance runs to make it 5-1, aided by a pair of Mercy errors in the field.

Wildcats pitcher Kelcie Bormann would keep the Mavericks bats quiet the rest of the way to seal the win, finishing with 11 strikeouts while allowing only three hits in seven innings.

Gardiner ended the afternoon 1-for-2 with a run scored, while freshman Marlena Marzigliano (Highland Mills, N.Y./Cornwall) recorded Mercy's other base knock.

Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks conclude their Florida trip with matchups against American International at 9 am and Bentley at 11 am.
