Augustine Nets Five Free Position Goals as Women's Lacrosse Faces East Stroudsburg

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. (Mar. 14, 2015)- Junior Nicole Augustine (Kingston, N.Y. /Kingston) scored five free-position goals, as the Mercy College women's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference contest to the Warriors of East Stroudsburg University, 14-9, on Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors improve to 3-0 overall, while the Mavericks fall to 2-2 overall.

Mercy fell behind 1-0 early, before Augustine evened the game at 1-1 on a free position shot with 26:31 remaining. After two unanswered goals by ESU, Augustine netted her second goal of the first half, on a free position shot, to cut the Warriors lead to 3-2 with 20:54 remaining. 

Freshman Nicole Kleet (Huntington Station, N.Y. / Walt Whitman) would net a goal to keep the Mavericks within striking distance at 4-3 with 15:56 remaining. ESU would respond with four unanswered goals to take a 9-4 lead into halftime.

In the second half, ESU scored the first goal of the second half to take their largest lead of the game at 10-4. 

Mercy would close the Warriors lead to 10-8 with 13:45 remaining, as freshman Grace Davidson (West Islip, N.Y. / West Islip) netted two free position goals and senior Marissa Kluber (Wading River, N.Y. / Shoreham-Wading River) scored her first goal of the afternoon, off an assist from fellow classmate Keri Watson (Massapequa Park, N.Y. / Massapequa).

The Warriors sealed the game as they netted four unanswered goals in the final 12 minutes.

Redshirt senior Nicole Kline (Deer Park, N.Y./ Deer Park) and Meg McNally (Hillburn, N.Y./ Lock Haven Univ.) both scooped up three groundballs and had a caused turnover, while sophomore Melissa DellaRocca (Lindenhurst, N.Y./ Lindenhurst) finished with two groundballs and two caused turnovers. Sophomore Jillian Rocco (Dix Hills, N.Y. /Half Hollow Hills East) made eight saves in 60 minutes of work, while Jessica Maxwell made 10 saves in 59:45 of work for ESU.

Head Coach Dawn Anselmin and the Mavericks will return to action on Wednesday, Mar. 18th, as they will face the Chargers of Dominican College at the Torne Valley Sports Complex in Hillburn, N.Y. at 4:00 p.m.
