Eight Different Mavericks Score as No. 10/14 Men's Lacrosse Earns 14-8 Win Over SNHU
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 17, 2015) – Eight different Mavericks recorded a goal as the No. 10/14 Mercy College men's lacrosse team defeated Southern New Hampshire University, 14-8, on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (5-1) extend their win streak to three games in their first contest decided by more than one goal, while the Penmen (1-4) have now dropped four in a row.
Senior Jesse Wood (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) paced Mercy on the score sheet with two goals and two assists to go along with eight groundballs. Junior Robert Rossi (North Massapequa, N.Y./Adelphi) chipped in a game-high three goals on seven shots and graduate student Kevin Glueckert (Bethpage, N.Y./Albany) nailed home a pair of goals, had nine ground balls and went 13-of-20 in the faceoff circle.
Sophomores Nick Wilcox (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) and Daniel Speicher (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) also put home a pair with Speicher also notching an assist. Junior Kyle Stockton (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) ended the afternoon with a goal and two assists and seniors Owen Krezmien (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) and Owen Valance (Glen Cove, N.Y./McDaniel College) each notched a goal with Krezmien's goal being the first of the defenseman's career. Freshman goalkeeper Michael Schneider (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) made 11 saves in the win to improve to 3-0.
The visitors were led by Jeremy Buckley who had two goals and an assist.
After playing in one-goal games in each of the first five games, the Mavericks would not have to rely on late game heroics as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one quarter of play. The contest was scoreless for the first eight minutes of play before Rossi put home his first of the day at the 6:49 mark to make it 1-0. Glueckert found the back of the net less than 30 seconds later to make it 2-0.
Rossi connected on his second of the day at the 5:43 mark off a feed from Wood to put Mercy up 3-0. Speicher got on the board with 56 seconds left in the frame off an assist from Stockton to make it 4-0 after one.
The Mavericks would continue to pour it on as Rossi put home is 18th of the season less than a minute into the second quarter to make it 5-0. Krezmien scored with 11:52 left in the half to make it 6-0 in favor of Mercy. The Mavericks increased the lead up to 8-0 with 8:21 left before halftime before the Penmen finally got on the board with 2:58 left to make it 8-1 heading into the intermission.
Mercy would not let off the gas to begin the second half as back-to-back goals less than two minutes in put them up 10-1. Southern New Hampshire scored the next three goals in the period to cut the deficit to 10-4 after three quarters.
The Mavericks cruised the rest of the way building their lead back up to eight, 14-6, with 3:01 remaining after back-to-back goals from Glueckert and Valance. The Penmen added a pair of goals late in the contest to lessen the margin of defeat.
Mercy held a 50-26 edge in shots and maintained a 46-38 edge in ground balls on the afternoon. The Mavericks went 2-for-5 on man-up opportunities and won 15-of-26 faceoffs.
Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks look to continue their winning streak as they head to Dowling College on Saturday, March 21st for a 1 p.m. start time.
