Greig Fans Nine as Baseball Hosts LIU Post in Series Opener
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 20, 2015) Senior Bryan Greig (New City, N.Y. / Clarkstown South) struck out nine batters as the Mercy College baseball team fell to the Pioneers of LIU Post, 3-1, in the series opener.
The Pioneers improve to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the East Coast Conference, while the Mavericks fall to 3-8 overall and 0-1 in the ECC.
The Pioneers scored first as they capitalized on a Mavericks throwing error to give them a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. LIU Post extended its lead to 2-0, after Kenny Daley hit an RBI single to left that scored Vinny Iacono.
Mercy would cut into the LIU Post lead in the bottom of the fourth, as junior Scott Hagan (Mamaroneck, N.Y. /SUNY Binghamton) scored after two different throwing errors. LIU Post held a 2-1 lead. The Mavericks threated in the eighth as sophomore Michael Grudzinski (Islip, N.Y. / Islip) walked and then eventually advanced to third on a throwing error during Hagan's at-bat. Hagan would reach first on an error by the third baseman and advanced to second on the overthrow. The Pioneers got out of the jam by striking out the remaining batter of the inning.
LIU Post scored an insurance run in the bottom of the ninth on a wild pitch. Senior Sal Palumbo (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) doubled and junior Justin Palladino (Yonkers, N.Y. / Westchester C.C.) walked to open the bottom of the ninth, but the Pioneers struck out three batters in a row to end the game.
Jake DeCarli struck out eight and improves to 2-1, while Greig falls to 1-2 with the loss. Dan Jagiello earned the save for the Pioneers.
Head Coach Jason Lamando and the Mavericks will return to action tomorrow, Mar. 21, as they will host the Pioneers of LIU Post University in the second game of a four game series, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
