Baseball Rolls in Game One of Doubleheader Against LIU Post

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 22, 2015)- The Mercy College baseball team took the first game of a doubleheader against the Pioneers of LIU Post University on Sunday afternoon.

The Mavericks now stand at 4-9 overall and 1-2 in the East Coast Conference, while the Pioneers now stand at 4-5 overall and 2-1 in the ECC.

Game 1: Mercy 13 LIU Post 1

The Mavericks dominated one game as they scored 13 runs on 19 hits. The Mavericks put the first run of the afternoon on the scoreboard as freshman Bryan Torres (Bronx, N.Y. / All Hallows) hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score junior James Patterson (Cornwall, N.Y. / Cornwall), who singled to open the top of fifth. Mercy led 1-0.

Mercy broke the game wide open in the top of the sixth, as they battered around the order, scoring eight runs on eight hits. Sophomore Michael Grudzinski (Islip, N.Y. / Islip) singled and junior Scott Hagan (Mamaroneck, N.Y. / SUNY Binghamton) reached on a throwing error to open the inning. After senior Bryan Greig (New City, N.Y. / Clarkstown South) grounded into an out, to score Grudzinski, junior Justin Palladino (Yonkers, N.Y. / Westchester C.C.) singled to score Hagan giving Mercy a 3-0 lead.

Mercy would take a 5-0 lead as senior Sal Palumbo (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) singled to score freshman John Young (New Hyde Park, N.Y. / Archbishop Molloy) and Palladino. Freshman Liam Slattery (Floral Park, N.Y. / Archbishop Molloy) then doubled, which would advance Palumbo to third, before Torres doubled down the left field line to clear the bases giving Mercy a 7-0 lead.

Mercy finished off the inning as Grudzinski tripled to left center, allowing Torres to score, and Hagan singled through the left side to score Grudzinski, before the Pioneers were able to secure the final out.

LIU Post finally crossed the plate in the bottom of the seventh, as the Mavericks held an 8-1 lead. Mercy continued their hot bats as they scored four runs on four hits in the top of the eighth. Torres hit an inside the park homerun and Greig tripled to left field to score Grudzinski.

Palladino went 4-for-5 with two RBI's and a run scored, while Torres finished 3-for-5 with three RBI's and two runs scored. Sophomore Matt Nalbone (Islip, N.Y. / Islip) earned his first victory of the season as he struck out 13 batters in eight innings pitched. James Long took the loss and fell to 0-2.

Game 2: Mercy 4 LIU Post 5

David Groeneveld homered in the bottom of the sixth to prevent the Mavericks from sweeping the Pioneers.  Greig put the Mavericks on the board first as he hit an RBI single to score Grudzinski, who reached on a fielding error, to take a 1-0 lead.

LIU Post responded with two RBI's singles in the bottom half of the first to put the Pioneers up 3-1. The Mavericks answered in the top half of the second as Hagan and Greig hit RBI single's to score Grudzinski and Torres. Mercy took a 4-3 advantage.

Post evened the game at 4-4, as Thomas Asbaty hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Vinny Iacono, before Groeneveld hit the winning home run in the sixth.

Hagan finished 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Grieg went 2-for-4 with two RBI's. Dillon Burke improved to 2-0, while junior Christian Hock (Trumbull, Conn. / Franklin Pierce Univ.) took the loss and falls to 1-2.    

Head Coach Jason Lamando and the Mavericks will return to action on Tuesday, Mar. 24th, as they will host the Pioneers of LIU Post University in the finale of a four game series beginning at 3:00 p.m.
