Watson Has Career Afternoon as Women's Lacrosse Stops Caldwell, 16-6

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 23, 2014)- Senior Keri Watson (Massapequa Park, N.Y. / Massapequa) recorded a career-high nine points on two goals and a career-high seven assists as the Mercy College women's lacrosse team defeated the Cougars of Caldwell College, 16-6, on Monday afternoon.

Freshman Nicole Kleet (Huntington Station, N.Y. / Walt Whitman) netted four goals as the Mavericks improve to 4-2 overall. Freshman Emily Fey totaled a hat-trick as the Cougars fall to 2-2 overall.

Watson had her hand in the first three goals, as she assisted on scores by freshman Grace Davidson (West Islip, N.Y. / West Islip) and redshirt senior Meg McNally (Hillburn, N.Y. / Lock Haven Univ.), before netting her first goal of the afternoon to give Mercy a 3-0 lead with 26:55 remaining.  After sophomore Sara Hennessey (East Syracuse, N.Y. / East Syracuse Minoa) netted her third goal of the year, Watson assisted on freshman Emily Jehle (Wading River, N.Y. / Riverhead) first collegiate goal to take a 5-0 lead with 21:48 left.

Mercy continued to roll, as Watson found the back of the net herself connecting off an assist from Hennessey. The Mavericks passing was crisp and on-point in the first half as goals by Junior Nicole Augustine (Kingston, N.Y. / Kingston), sophomore Alexa Haines (Lindenhurst, N.Y. / Lindenhurst), and senior Marissa Kluber (Wading River, N.Y. / Shoreham-Wading River), were all assisted on by Kluber, McNally and Jehle, respectively.

Mercy held a 10-0 lead with under a minute to play, before Courtney Donlon netted a free position goal with five seconds remaining. The Mavericks took a 10-1 lead into the break.  

Caldwell opened the second stanza netting two goals to cut the Mavericks lead to 10-3 with 22:15 left. Mercy attempted to put some breathing room between them and the Cougars as Kleet and redshirt senior Nicole Kline (Deer Park, N.Y. / Deer Park) scored to help Mercy go up 12-3 with 14:59 remaining in the game.

Watson continued to find open teammates as she assisted on three of the final four goals scored by the Mavericks.

Freshman Hope Coticchio (West Babylon, N.Y. / West Babylon) finished with three groundballs, two draw controls and three caused turnovers, while sophomore Melissa DellaRocca (Lindenhurst, N.Y. / Lindenhurst) finished with three groundballs and two caused turnovers. Sophomore Jillian Rocco (Dix Hills, N.Y. / Half Hollow Hills East) and freshman Cara Moran (Tomkins Cove, N.Y. / North Rockland) both made three saves apiece, but Rocco earned the victory and improved to 3-2. Kline finished with six draw controls.

Head Coach Dawn Anselmin and the Mavericks will return to action on Wednesday, Mar. 25th, as they will host the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College at 4:00 p.m.
