ARLINGTON, Va. (Mar. 25, 2015) – Ten different Mavericks scored as the No. 10/12 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned its fifth straight win with a 16-7 triumph over ECC foe District of Columbia on Wednesday afternoon at Long Bridge Park.

The Mavericks (7-1, 2-0 ECC) continue their best start since the 2013 season when they also started 7-1 and avenge a loss in last season's meeting, while the Firebirds (1-4, 0-3 ECC) have now dropped four in a row.

Senior Jesse Wood (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) led the way with four goals and four assists on the day, while junior Connor McLachlan (Albany, N.Y./Guilderland) continued his strong play with a three-goal outing. Sophomore Nick Wilcox (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) found the back of the net twice and classmate Daniel Speicher (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) scored a goal and had two assists. Junior Kyle Stockton (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) had two assists and junior Robert Rossi (North Massapequa, N.Y./Adelphi) added a goal and an assist.

Also, contributing for the Mavericks was junior Bobby McDonough (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) who notched his first goal of the season and had an assist, while freshman Kyle McDonough (Wall Township, N.J./Wall) contributed an assist. Graduate student Kevin Glueckert (Bethpage, N.Y./Albany), senior Owen Valance (Glen Cove, N.Y./McDaniel College), junior Danny Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) and junior Ben Shepherd (Huntington Station, N.Y./Univ. of Tampa) recorded Mercy's other goals. Freshman Michael Schneider (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) made six saves and allowed three goals in 38 minutes to earn the win.

The Mavericks, coming off a pair of impressive wins, would keep their winning streak intact as they jumped out to an 11-2 halftime lead and would not look back in securing the win.

Valance opened up the scoring for Mercy with 11 minutes left in the first quarter off an assist from Wood to take a 1-0 lead. Rossi tallied his lone goal of the day with 7:43 left in the opening quarter off another feed from Wood to take a 2-0 lead.

UDC got on the board with a man-up goal less than 30 seconds later to make it 2-1 and would cut it once again to a one-goal game following a Wilcox goal, but McLachlan tallied his first with just over two minutes left in the frame to give Mercy a 4-2 lead after one.

The Mavericks took over in the second quarter, scoring three man-up goals as McLachlan tallied a pair and Speicher chipped in one. Chillianis scored his first goal of the season at the 12:46 mark to put Mercy up 6-2 and Wood added two in the quarter to give the Mavericks a commanding 11-2 lead heading into halftime.

The second half saw Mercy increase its lead to 16-4 with 7:22 left in the game as Bobby McDonough and Shepherd each recorded their first goals of the season. The Firebirds finished the game with three straight goals to lessen the margin of defeat.

The Mavericks won despite winning only 2-of-26 face-offs, but were able to go 5-of-11 on man-up opportunities and hold a 50-30 edge in shots.

Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks return to action on Tuesday, March 31st as they travel to Chestnut Hill for a 4 pm start time.
