Augustine Nets Five as Women's Lacrosse Travels to Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Mar. 28, 2015)- Junior Nicole Augustine (Kingston, N.Y. /Kingston) scored five goals as the Mercy College women's lacrosse team dropped an East Coast Conference contest to the Purple Knights of the University of Bridgeport, 13-11 on Saturday afternoon.

Gabrielle Valela and Emily Catalano both netted three goals apiece for the Purple Knights who remain undefeated at 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the ECC. Redshirt senior Nicole Kline (Deer Park, N.Y./ Deer Park) and freshman Nicole Kleet (Huntington Station, N.Y./ Walt Whitman) both netted two goals apiece for the Mavericks who fall to 4-4 overall and 1-3 in the ECC.

Mercy took a 2-1 lead midway through the first half on two Kline goals. Bridgeport responded with four unanswered goals to take a 5-2 lead with 12:22 remaining. Augustine and Kleet both scored in the final 12 minutes to take a 6-4 deficit into halftime.

Mercy opened the second half by cutting the Bridgeport lead to 6-5, as Augustine scored her second goal of the afternoon on a feed from sophomore Alexa Haines (Lindenhurst, N.Y. /Lindenhurst). Bridgeport would retake a four goal lead, as they netted three unanswered goals, including two by Valela, to take a 9-6 lead with 22:33 remaining.

Freshman Grace Davidson (West Islip, N.Y. / West Islip) scored three minutes later to keep the Mavericks within striking distance. After an Abigail Benesh goal put the Purple Knights up 10-6, Augustine and Kleet netted three unanswered goals to draw the Mavericks to within one at 10-9. Bridgeport would again take a four goal lead as Catalano netted two of the three goals to take a 13-9 lead with 06:46 left to play.

Augustine and redshirt senior Meg McNally (Hillburn, N.Y./ Lock Haven Univ.) would score late to close the deficit to 13-11 as the time expired.   

Augustine added three groundballs and a caused turnover, while Kleet finished with four groundballs and two caused turnovers. Kline had two groundballs and four draw controls, while senior Keri Watson (Massapequa Park, N.Y. / Massapequa) scooped up three groundballs. Sophomore Jillian Rocco (Dix Hills, N.Y. / Half Hollow Hills East) made seven saves in 60 minutes of work between the pipes.

Head Coach Dawn Anselmin and the Mavericks will return to action on Wednesday, April 1st, as they will face the Griffins of Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, Pa. at 4:00 p.m.
