FLUSHING, N.Y. (Mar. 29, 2015) – Freshman Morgan Lloyd (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) went 3-for-6 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored as the Mercy College softball team dropped 4-3 and 5-0 decisions to Queens College in an ECC doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.

The Mavericks (1-14, 0-4 ECC) remain winless in conference play, while the Knights (10-8, 4-1 ECC) have won four in a row.

Game 1: Queens 4, Mercy 3

The opening game of the doubleheader saw a pitcher's duel break out early on as the two teams combined for only one run through the first five innings.

The Mavericks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third as sophomore Janelle Wade (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) hit a bunt single to drive in junior Milana Gilaga (Elmwood Park, N.J./Memorial). Sophomore Jackie Kielty (Middleboro, Mass./Dean College) continued to deal for Mercy, allowing only three hits and no runs through the first six innings.

Lloyd's two-run home run in the top of the sixth, following a senior Jackie Couillard (Wolcott, Conn./Wolcott) single earlier in the inning, gave the Mavericks a 3-0 lead after six innings.

Mercy went down in order in the top of the seventh and looked to close out the win. However, the Knights had different plans as they scored four runs in the frame on four hits to earn the win, with the winning run coming on a two-RBI single from Cat Pastor with one out in the inning.

Lloyd went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI and Gilaga finished the opener 2-for-3 with a run scored. Couillard ended game one 1-for-3 with a run scored and Kielty ended the game going 6 1/3 innings with three earned runs on six hits. Freshman Taylor Holmes (Ashford, Conn./E.O Smith) relieved Kielty in the seventh and took the loss to fall to 1-1.

Game 2: Queens 5, Mercy 0

After scoring three runs in the opener, the Mavericks were held off the scoreboard in game two as Monique Roberge tossed a complete game gem to secure the sweep for the Knights. Roberge finished with 17 strikeouts and allowed only three hits and walked two in seven innings.

The game remained scoreless until a Queens home run down the left field line in the third gave them a 1-0 lead after three. A two-run home run in the fourth increased the Knights lead to 3-0 after four innings of play.

Wade recorded singles in the third and sixth innings but the Mavericks would not be able to capitalize. The Knights concluded their scoring in the bottom of the sixth with two runs on two hits and a Mercy error to take a 5-0 lead and closed it out despite a Lloyd single in the seventh.

Wade ended the nightcap 2-for-3, while Lloyd finished game two 1-for-3. Sophomore Holly Pundick (Whiterock, B.C./Jefferson College) took the loss for the Mavericks, going 3 1/3 innings with three earned runs allowed on three hits.

Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks return to action tomorrow, March 30th as they play at Dominican College for a doubleheader beginning at 12 pm.
