Game 1: Dominican 3, Mercy 1
In the opening game of the day, the Mavericks received a strong outing from sophomore Anna Cochis (Clifton Park, N.Y./Catholic Central) who went the distance allowing only three earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.
However, the Mercy offense struggled to get the bats going against Chargers starter Madison Dove who tossed a complete game with only one earned run allowed on five hits.
Dominican got on the board in the bottom of the second as Jacqueline Gonzalez hit a two-run home run to left field to give the home team a 2-0 lead after two.
After a pair of scoreless innings, the Mavericks finally got on the board as Duford homered to left center to cut the Chargers lead to 2-1.
A Gonzalez RBI single up the middle gave Dominican a 3-1 lead after six. Mercy would get the tying run to third in the top of the seventh but a fly out to centerfield ended the threat and game.
Freshman Morgan Lloyd (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) continued her strong play with a 2-for-3 opening game and Duford went 1-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. Junior Milana Gilaga (Elmwood Park, N.J./Memorial) finished 1-for-2 and sophomore Katiana Golino (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) concluded the opener 1-for-2.
Game 2: Dominican 4, Mercy 1
The second game saw another low scoring affair with the Mavericks getting on the board first in the top of the first on an error by Dominican following a pair of hits from Golino and Couillard to take a 1-0 lead.
The Chargers took the lead for good in the bottom of the second with two runs on three hits and a Mercy error to build a 2-1 advantage after two.
Freshman Taylor Holmes (Ashford, Conn./E.O Smith) would settle down for the Mavericks and toss three consecutive scoreless innings, but Mercy could only muster two hits during that time.
The score remained 2-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth when the Chargers added a pair of insurance runs on four hits to take a 4-1 lead after six.
Following a groundout and strikeout to start the seventh, freshman Marlena Marzigliano (Highland Mills, N.Y./Cornwall) doubled to left center before advancing to third on a passed ball. The rally would end there as Emily Larsen induced a fly out to right to end the game.
Golino ended the nightcap 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Couillard went a perfect 2-for-2. Wade and Marzigliano recorded the Mavericks two other hits. Holmes ended the contest going 5 2/3 innings with two earned runs allowed on nine hits.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks will return to action tomorrow, March 31st at 2:30 pm with their home opener against Molloy College.
