LAFAYETTE HILL, Pa. (Mar. 31, 2015) – Despite senior Jesse Wood (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) becoming the program's all-time leader in career goals with his three on the day, the Mercy College men's lacrosse team suffered a 10-8 setback to Chestnut Hill College in an ECC matchup on Tuesday afternoon.

Wood, who now has 123 career goals, surpasses the previous mark of 121 set by Mike Marzocca who graduated in 2013.

The Mavericks (7-2, 2-1 ECC) see their five-game winning streak come to an end, while the Griffins (3-6, 1-4 ECC) snap a five-game losing streak.

Wood led the way for Mercy with three goals and an assist, while junior Robert Rossi (North Massapequa, N.Y./Adelphi) and sophomore Nick Wilcox (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) each recorded a goal and an assist. Juniors Connor McLachlan (Albany, N.Y./Guilderland), Kyle Stockton (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) and Danny Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) recorded the Mavericks other three goals. Freshman Michael Schneider (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) made four saves in picking up his first loss of the season.

The home team was led by Tanner Fisher who ended up with three goals.

The game seemed to be a mismatch coming in, but Chestnut Hill would show the Mavericks they were in for a fight as they opened the scoring with a goal less than a minute in to take a 1-0 lead.

A goal at the 6:55 mark of the first quarter gave the Griffins a 2-0 advantage midway through the quarter. The Mavericks finally got on the board just over a minute later as Wood found the back of the net to cut the deficit to 2-1. Rossi and Stockton built off that goal with a pair to close out the quarter to give Mercy a 3-2 lead after one.

The second quarter saw Chestnut Hill even up the score at 3-3 with 12:11 left before half before back-to-back goals from McLachlan and Wood put the Mavericks back up two, 5-3. A goal with just over two minutes left before halftime by the Griffins gave Mercy a 5-4 lead heading into the break.

The Mavericks were able to outscore the home team 2-1 in the third quarter as Chillianis and Wilcox scored, giving them a 7-5 lead after three.

Mercy entered the fourth quarter looking to seal the win and extend their win streak, but Chestnut Hill had other plans as they ripped off five unanswered to begin the frame to retake the lead and build it to 10-7 with 4:40 remaining.

The deficit proved too much to overcome for the Mavericks as they could not put one past the goalkeeper until Wood tallied his final goal of the day on a man-up opportunity with 20 seconds left.

Mercy held a 35-26 edge in ground balls, but was outshot 34-24 on the afternoon.

Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks will look to bounce back as they host Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday, April 4th at 1 p.m.
