DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 1, 2015) – Senior Jackie Couillard (Wolcott, Conn./Wolcott) went 4-for-6 with a run scored and a double as the Mercy College softball team dropped 1-0 and 3-2 decisions to Bloomfield College in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon at Smith Field.

The Mavericks (2-18) lose for the first time at home this season, while the Bears (16-8) have now won five of their last six.

Game 1: Bloomfield 1, Mercy 0

A pitcher's duel broke out in the opener between Mercy sophomore starter Holly Pundick (Whiterock, B.C./Jefferson College) and Bloomfield starter Kirsten Wilson with the two teams combining for only one run on 14 hits.

The winning run came in the first inning for the Bears as Wilson helped her cause with a home run to give herself a 1-0 lead.

That would be all the support Wilson needed as she would allow only five hits and struck out 16 on the day to secure the win.

A Couillard double in the sixth gave the Mavericks their best scoring opportunity of the game, but a strikeout would end the threat.

Pundick tossed a gem of her own, allowing one earned run on nine hits while punching out two on the afternoon.

Couillard ended the opener a perfect 3-for-3, while freshman Morgan Lloyd (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) and sophomore Liza Ueno (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) each went 1-for-3 in game one.

Game 2: Bloomfield 3, Mercy 2

The second game of the day also saw a low-scoring affair breakout with the visitors taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on a hit and a Mercy error.

However, the Mavericks clawed their way back into the game as junior Amanda Gardiner (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) smacked an RBI single to left field followed by an Adriana Bencomo (Fresno, Calif./Fresno City College) RBI groundout that scored Lloyd to even up the score at 2-2 after four innings of play.

Bloomfield would retake the lead on an RBI single to right field in the top of the sixth to make it 3-2. In the bottom half of the frame, Gardiner continued her strong afternoon with a single up the middle with two outs, but a groundout to third would end the inning.

Mercy had one last opportunity to even up the score, but a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh ended the game and sent the Bears home with the sweep.

Gardiner put together a perfect 3-for-3 game two with an RBI, while Couillard went 1-for-3 with a run scored and Ueno batted 1-for-2. Lloyd notched the Mavericks other hit with a 1-for-3 outing with a run scored.

Sophomore Anna Cochis (Clifton Park, N.Y./Catholic Central) made the start in the circle and went the distance allowing three earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts.

Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks will return to action tomorrow as they head to ECC foe Dowling College for a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 pm.
