Davidson and Kleet Combine for Seven Goals as Women's Lacrosse Faces Philadelphia

(Apr. 11, 2015)- Freshmen Grace Davidson (West Islip, N.Y. / West Islip) and Nicole Kleet (Huntington Station, N.Y. / Walt Whitman) combined for seven goals as the Mercy College women's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference contest to the Rams of Philadelphia University, 17-11 on Saturday afternoon.
Lauren Hartman and Liz Mower both scored five goals apiece for the Rams who improve to 7-6 overall. Senior Keri Watson (Massapequa Park, N.Y. / Massapequa) netted two goals for the Mavericks who fall to 5-8 overall.
The Rams opened the game with three unanswered goals in the first five minutes, but the Mavericks responded with four unanswered goals, including back-to-back scores by Kleet, to take a 4-3 advantage with 18:58 remaining. Philadelphia answered by scoring seven out of the final eight goals in the remaining 18 minutes of the first half. Kleet completed her hat-trick in the first half by netting a goal at the 10:37 mark.
The Rams held a 10-5 lead at intermission.
In the second half, the Mavericks trimmed the deficit to three at 11-8, after Davidson netted two goals and Watson found the back of the cage for the first time this afternoon. Philadelphia retook a five goal lead as Allison Brian scored twice in a span of 15 seconds.
Mercy made one last attempt to crack the deficit as Watson and redshirt senior Nicole Kline (Deer Park, N.Y. / Deer Park) netted back-to-back unassisted goals and trimmed the lead to three at 14-11. The Rams closed out the game by scoring the final three goals as time expired.
Kleet added six draw controls, two groundballs, and two caused turnovers, while Davidson added four groundballs, three draw controls and one caused turnover. Kline finished with four draw controls. Sophomore Jillian Rocco (Dix Hills, N.Y. / Half Hollow Hills East) made two saves in 17:50 and took the loss, while freshman Cara Moran (Tomkins Cove, N.Y. / North Rockland) finished with five saves in the final 42:10. Felicia Branagan made six saves and improves to 4-0.
Head Coach Dawn Anselmin and the Mavericks will return to action on Tuesday, Apr. 14th, as they will host the No. 17 Golden Lions of Dowling College at 5:00 p.m.
