Baseball Splits Non-Conference Matchup Against Post University

WATERBURY, Conn. (Apr. 12, 2015) - The Mercy College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with the Eagles from Post University at Municipal Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Mavericks record now stands at 8-19 overall, while the Eagles record now stands at 12-13 overall.

Game 1: Post 6, Mercy 4

The Mavericks rallied from an early 1-0 deficit, as junior Blake Coalla (Wappingers Falls, N.Y. / Roy C Ketcham) tripled and then scored on a wild pitch to even the game at 1-1. Mercy took a 3-1 lead in the third, as junior Scott Hagan (Mamaroneck, N.Y. / SUNY Binghamton) ripped an RBI double to score sophomore Michael Grudzinski (Islip, N.Y./ Islip). Hagan would cross the dish later in the inning, as he stole third base and then was walked home.

Post countered with a four-run inning in the fifth, allowing them to take a 6-3 lead entering the ninth. In the ninth, freshman Liam Slattery (Floral Park, N.Y. / Archbishop Molloy) walked to start the inning and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Grudzinski.  

Junior Christian Hock (Trumbull, Conn. / Franklin Pierce Univ.) tossed eight strikeouts in six innings pitched and took the loss.

Game 2: Mercy 4, Post 1

Senior Bryan Greig (New City, N.Y. / Clarkstown South) improved to 3-3 with a nine strikeout complete game as the Mavericks took the second half of the doubleheader. Grieg only allowed two hits with no earned runs and three walks.

The Mavericks trailed early in the second game, as Julio Velazquez tripled and then scored on an error. Mercy even the game at 1-1 in the fifth, as Hagan scored on back-to-back errors by the Eagles. The Mavericks would take the lead in the sixth as senior Sal Palumbo (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford), Hagan and junior Justin Palladino (Yonkers, N.Y. / Westchester C.C.) all singled, to allow Palumbo to cross the plate.

Mercy added two insurance runs in the seventh, as junior Justin Echevarria (Bronx, N.Y. / Orange CC) crossed the plate on another error and Palumbo doubled to score Grudzinski, who reached on a walk to get on base.

Palumbo went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while senior Blake Hasbrouck (Middletown, N.Y. / Orange CC)  and sophomore Bryan Gutierrez (Bronx, N.Y. / In-tech Academy) both recorded a hit in the victory.

Head Coach Jason Lamando and the Mavericks will return to action on Wednesday, Apr. 15th in Caldwell, N.J., facing the Cougars of Caldwell University at 3:00 p.m.
