DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 14, 2015) – Despite RBIs from sophomore Jackie Kielty (Middleboro, Mass./Dean College) and junior Amanda Gardiner (Stratford, N.J./Sterling), the Mercy College softball team dropped 4-0 and 12-2 decisions to Queens College on Tuesday afternoon at Smith Field in an ECC doubleheader.

The Mavericks (6-28, 5-12 ECC) drop their second consecutive doubleheader, while the Knights (20-13, 12-3 ECC) have now won three in a row.

Game 1: Queens 4, Mercy 0

A low-scoring affair broke out in the opener as the two teams combined for four runs on 13 hits. Sophomore Anna Cochis (Clifton Park, N.Y./Catholic Central) made the start in the circle for the Mavericks and tossed three scoreless innings to start the game.

However, the Knights would break through with a run in the fourth on a Kayla Morris RBI single to left field to take a 1-0 lead.

After a scoreless half inning for Mercy, Queens added on to its lead with three runs on four hits and a Maverick error to build a 4-0 advantage.

Mercy would not get a runner on base in the fifth and sixth innings leading to their last at bat which saw senior Angela Zayas (Livingston Manor, N.Y./Livingston Manor) lead off the frame with a bunt single. Zayas reached second but a pair of groundouts would end the game and give the Knights a 4-0 victory.

Zayas went 1-for-1, while freshman Marlena Marzigliano (Highland Mills, N.Y./Cornwall) and junior Adriana Bencomo (Fresno, Calif./Fresno City College) recorded the Mavericks other two hits. Cochis went the distance with only three earned runs allowed on 10 hits with three strikeouts.

Game 2: Queens 12, Mercy 2

The nightcap saw Queens show why they are one of the top teams in the ECC standings as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead after four innings of play.

Mercy would get on the board in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Gardiner to right field that scored Zayas who had doubled in the previous at bat. A pair of fly outs would end the threat and send the Mavericks to the sixth down 6-1.

The Knights broke open the game in the sixth as they scored six runs on six hits, capped off by a Kayla Morris three-run home run to make it 12-1.

Kielty doubled home senior Michelle Duford (Maple Ridge, B.C./Seward County CC) in the bottom of the sixth but the deficit proved too much to overcome and the game ended after six innings via the run rule.

Gardiner led the Mavericks at the plate with a 2-for-3 game two, while Kielty went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Kielty made the start in the circle and took the loss.

Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks return to action tomorrow, April 15th as they host Bridgeport at 2:30 pm.
