Palumbo Homers as Baseball Travels to Caldwell
Box Score CALDWELL, N.J. (Apr. 15, 2015)- Senior Sal Palumbo (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) homered as the Mercy College baseball team dropped a non-conference contest to the Cougars of Caldwell University, 8-3 on Wednesday afternoon.
Justin Jeannette went 3-for-5 with three RBI's and two runs scored for the Cougars who improve to 7-20 overall. Sophomore Bryan Gutierrez (Bronx, N.Y. / In-tech Academy) recorded an RBI for the Mavericks, who fall to 8-20 overall.
The Mavericks opened their scoring in the top of the second, as juniors James Patterson (Cornwall, N.Y. / Cornwall) and Justin Palladino (Yonkers, N.Y. /Westchester C.C.) both singled to start the inning. Palumbo would hit a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. Patterson would cross the dish on the very next at-bat as Gutierrez reached on a fielder's choice.
Caldwell countered with three RBI singles in the bottom of the third and a two RBI homer in the fourth to give them a 5-1 lead.
Mercy would cut the lead to 5-2 in the fifth as freshman Liam Slattery ( Floral Park, N.Y. / Archbishop Molloy) scored on a throwing error by the shortstop, after singling to left center to start the inning and then stealing second. The Cougars picked up insurance runs in the fifth and sixth, before Palumbo put one over the wall in the seventh.
Slattery went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while sophomore Michael Grudzinski (Islip, N.Y. / Islip), freshman John Young (New Hyde Park, N.Y. / Archbishop Molloy) and junior Scott Hagan (Mamaroneck, N.Y. / SUNY Binghamton) all recorded a hit. Sagar Patel earned his first victory of the season, while sophomore Marc Medico (Eastchester, N.Y. / Eastchester) took the loss. Senior Vincent Luppino (Englewood Cliffs, N.J. / Ramapo College), freshman Vincent Vacco (Cresskill, N.J. / Cresskill) , freshman Manny Velasquez (Bronx, N.Y. / Cardinal Hayes) and senior Nick Caruso (Yorktown Heights, N.Y. / Lakeland) all saw action on the hill.
Head Coach Jason Lamando and the Mavericks will return to action on Friday, Apr. 17th in Oakdale, N.Y. facing the Golden Lions of Dowling College at 3:00 p.m.
