Gutierrez Smacks Three Hits as Baseball Travels to Dowling in Series Opener
Box Score SHIRLEY, N.Y. (Apr. 17, 2015)- Sophomore Bryan Gutierrez (Bronx, N.Y. / In-tech Academy) went 3-for-4 with an RBI, as the Mercy College baseball team dropped an East Coast Conference contest to the Golden Lions of Dowling College, 12-4 on Friday afternoon.
Tyler Hardison went 4-for-5 with two runs scored for the Golden Lions who improve to 19-8 overall and 8-5 in the ECC. Senior Sal Palumbo (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) went 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Mavericks who fall to 8-21 overall and 2-11 in the ECC.
The Golden Lions produced two runs on four hits in a row to give them a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Mercy dwindled the deficit in the third as junior Scott Hagan (Mamaroneck, N.Y. / SUNY Binghamton) tripled to center field and senior Bryan Greig (New City, N.Y./ Clarkstown South) drove him in on a sacrifice fly.
Dowling broke the game open as they scored four runs in the fourth, two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to take a 9-1.
The Mavericks best inning of the afternoon came in the ninth, as they manufactured three runs on two hits. Palumbo walked to start the inning, junior James Patterson (Cornwall, N.Y. / Cornwall) singled up the middle and senior Joseph Gismondi (East Meadow, N.Y. / East Meadow) was hit by a pitch, which loaded the bases for Gutierrez. Gutierrez stepped to the dish and smacked an RBI single to score Palumbo. The bases remained loaded for freshman Liam Slattery (Floral Park, N.Y. / Archbishop Molloy), who would record an RBI as he reached on a walk and Patterson scored. Sophomore Michael Grudzinski (Islip, N.Y. / Islip) earned the final RBI of the afternoon, hitting a sacrifice fly to score Gismondi.
Cody McPartland picked up the victory and improves to 3-1, while sophomore Matt Nalbone (Islip, N.Y. / Islip) took the loss and falls 2-5. Freshman Anthony Caminiti (Wantagh, N.Y. / St. Mary's), sophomore Marc Medico (Eastchester, N.Y. / Eastchester) and junior Blake Coalla (Wappingers Falls, N.Y. / Roy C Ketcham) all saw action on the hill for the Mavericks.
