ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Apr. 18, 2015) – Despite a home run, three RBI and three hits from senior Jackie Couillard (Wolcott, Conn./Wolcott), the Mercy College softball team dropped 5-2 and 9-1 decisions to ECC opponent Molloy College on Saturday afternoon at Bob Klien Field.

The Mavericks (8-31, 7-15 ECC) drop the season series to Molloy 3-1, while the Lions (22-20, 17-5 ECC) have now won seven games in a row.

Game 1: Molloy 5, Mercy 2

The first game of the day saw Molloy jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning when Victoria Gunnels hit a two-run home run to left field following a Maverick error.

Mercy struggled offensively against Lion pitching again as they accumulated only four hits with two of them coming in the first inning off the bats of sophomore Janelle Wade (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) and Couillard.

After a scoreless second inning, the Mavericks got on the board as Couillard singled through the left side to drive in sophomore Katiana Golino (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) and junior Milana Gilaga (Elmwood Park, N.J./Memorial) to even up the score at 2-2 after two and a half innings of play.

Sophomore starter Anna Cochis (Clifton Park, N.Y./Catholic Central) settled down after the first inning home run and would pitch three scoreless innings in a row until Molloy broke through in the fifth with a pair of runs on three hits to take a 4-2 lead after five.

Mercy would go down in order in the sixth and seventh innings with the Lions adding on a run in the sixth to win the opener, 5-2.

Couillard led the way with a 2-for-3 opening game with two RBI, while Gilaga and Wade recorded the Mavericks other two hits. Cochis went five innings with three earned runs allowed on seven hits to earn the loss.

Game 2: Molloy 9, Mercy 1

The nightcap saw a repeat of the first game as Molloy again jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning of play following a two-run home run by Tracey Balinskas.

The Mavericks would get runners on second in both the second and third innings but were unable to capitalize, leading to a big seven-run inning by the Lions in the third. Molloy led off the inning with a home run and later received an RBI single, two-RBI double and a three-run home run to take a commanding 9-0 lead after three.

Couillard got Mercy on the board with a home run to left field, her fourth of the season, but the Mavericks could not get the bats going as they were held to only three hits in game two.

Mercy threatened in the fifth following a walk and Liza Ueno (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) double to put runners on second and third with one out. However, a strikeout and a caught stealing at home ended the threat and the game after five innings, giving Molloy the sweep.

Couillard went 1-for-2 in the nightcap with an RBI and run scored, while Ueno went a perfect 1-for-1 and senior Michelle Duford (Maple Ridge, B.C./Seward County CC) finished 1-for-2. Sophomore Holly Pundick (Whiterock, B.C./Jefferson College) made the start and went the first two innings with three earned runs allowed to take the loss.

Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks return to the field tomorrow as they host Dowling at 1 p.m. for Senior Day in an ECC doubleheader.
