Slattery Drives in Two as Baseball Travels to Dowling

SHIRLEY, N.Y. (Apr. 18, 2015)- Freshman Liam Slattery (Floral Park, N.Y. / Archbishop Molloy) drove in two runs and went 3-for-5 at the plate, as the Mercy College baseball team dropped an East Coast Conference contest to the Golden Lions of Dowling College, 10-5 on Saturday afternoon.  

Adam Schuster went 1-for-4 with three RBI's and two runs scored, while Tyler Piccolo went 3-for-5 with two runs scored for the Golden Lions who improve to 20-8 and 9-5 in the ECC. Senior Bryan Greig (New City, N.Y. / Clarkstown South) went 1-for-3 with two RBI's for the Mavericks who fall to 8-22 overall and 2-12 in the ECC.

Slattery was involved with all three of the Mavericks first three runs. He singled to center field and then scored on Greig's RBI fielder's choice in the first, before smacking a two RBI single in the second to score junior Justin Echevarria (Bronx, N.Y. / Orange CC) and sophomore Bryan Gutierrez (Bronx, N.Y. / In-tech Academy). Mercy held a 3-2 lead.

Dowling opened the game up in the fourth, as the Golden Lions loaded the bases for Schuster, who hit a three RBI double to clear the bases and take a 5-2 lead. Schuster would cross the dish himself, as he scored on a John Cruz RBI single to take a 6-2 lead.

Greig recorded his RBI in the fifth as sophomore Michael Grudzinski (Islip, N.Y. / Islip) reached on a walk and stole second, before Greig singled to score Grudzinski. Mercy cut the deficit to 6-3, before Dowling responded with a run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth to take a 9-4 lead.

Mercy recorded their final run of the afternoon in the seventh, as Grudzinski reached second on an error and a wild pitch. After junior Scott Hagan (Mamaroneck, N.Y. /SUNY Binghamton) walked and Grieg grounded out, senior Sal Palumbo (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) hit an RBI sacrifice fly to left to score Grudzinski.

Brendan Butler improved to 5-1, while junior James Patterson (Cornwall, N.Y. / Cornwall) struck out three in six innings pitched and falls to 1-6. Senior Nick Caruso (Yorktown Heights, N.Y. / Lakeland) made a relief appearance and struck two batters in two innings pitched.

Head Coach Jason Lamando and the Mavericks will close out the series against the Golden Lions of Dowling tomorrow, Apr. 19th, in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
