In their final tune up before taking on nationally ranked LIU Post for Senior Day this weekend, the Mavericks jumped out of the gates early to a 2-0 lead as McLachlan scored twice off a feeds from Wood and Stockton.
The Purple Knights responded less than two minutes later with a goal of their own to make it 2-1. Rossi and Speicher came right back with a pair to make it 4-1 with 6:50 left in the first. The Mavericks looked well on their way to another win, but St. Michael's had other plans as they scored the final goal of the first quarter and five unanswered in the second quarter to lead 7-4 at halftime and leave Mercy looking for answers.
The Mavericks found an answer early on in the third quarter as Speicher and McLachlan scored 15 seconds apart to make it 7-6 with 13:03 left in the third. The Purple Knights, as they did in the first half, would respond again with two straight to close the frame and give themselves a 9-6 advantage heading into the last.
Another strong start for Mercy in a quarter led to Rossi scoring a man-up goal off an assist from Wood and Stockton tallying a goal to once again get the Mavericks within one, 9-8, with 7:59 left to play.
After four scoreless minutes, St. Michael's would put the game away with three goals in a two-minute span to go up 12-8 with 1:30 remaining and put the game out of reach. Wilcox found the back of the net with 57 seconds left to make it 12-9, but Mercy would run out of time to make a comeback.
The Mavericks held a 32-30 edge in shots and 36-32 margin in groundballs. Mercy also went 17-for-23 on faceoffs and 2-for-4 on man-up opportunities.
Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks will look to rebound as they host No. 5/6 LIU Post for Senior Day on Saturday, April 25th at 1 p.m.
