Moran Makes Game Tying Save to Preserve Second Straight ECC Victory, 10-9

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr. 21, 2015)- Freshman Cara Moran (Tomkins Cove, N.Y. / North Rockland) made four saves, including the game tying save as time expired, giving the Mercy College women's lacrosse team its second straight East Coast Conference victory over the Knights of Queens College, 10-9 on Tuesday afternoon.

Freshman Nicole Kleet (Huntington Station, N.Y. / Walt Whitman) netted four goals for the Mavericks who improve to 7-9 overall and 3-4 in the ECC. Taylor Martello finished with four goals and one assist for the Knights who fall to 2-10 overall and 1-6 in the ECC.

Redshirt senior Nicole Kline (Deer Park, N.Y. / Deer Park) netted the first Mercy goal of the afternoon to even the game at 1-1, but back-to-back goals by the Knights' Alyssa McCormick propelled Queens to a 3-1 advantage with under 20 minutes remaining in the first half.

Kleet would score her first goal of the afternoon to cut the deficit to one at 3-2. Mercy would continue to trade goals with the Knights for the rest of the half. Carly Cheirico bookended Kline's second goal of the afternoon to hold a 5-3 lead. Redshirt senior Meg McNally (Hillburn, N.Y. / Lock Haven Univ.) would net a man-down goal with 20 seconds remaining to give Queens a 5-4 halftime lead.

In the second half, the momentum was on Mercy's side as senior Marissa Kluber (Wading River, N.Y. / Shoreham-Wading River) scored the game tying goal to open the second stanza.

Mercy would take their first lead of the game at 7-6 as sophomore Alexa Haines (Lindenhurst, N.Y. / Lindenhurst) scored off a feed from senior Keri Watson (Massapequa Park, N.Y. / Massapequa). Kleet would complete her trick and give the Mavericks an 8-6 advantage with 18:46 remaining. Queens regained the lead on three unanswered goals, including two by Martello and one by McCormick, to take a 9-8 lead with 7:42 remaining.  

The Mavericks responded by scoring two unanswered within a span of two minutes. Kluber would score off an assist from Watson to even the game at 9-9, and Kleet would net the game winning goal, with just over three minutes to play, off an assist from freshman Grace Davidson (West Islip, N.Y. / West Islip). The Knights threaten late as a shot by Martello was pulled just wide of the goal and Moran stonewalled a shot by Janet Campo as time expired.  

Kleet added four groundballs, while Kluber finished with three caused turnovers and two groundballs. Davidson finished with three draw controls, while McNally added finished with three groundballs and two caused turnovers.

Head Coach Dawn Anselmin and the Mavericks will close out the 2015 season, facing the Lions of Molloy College in Rockville Centre, N.Y. on Saturday, Apr. 25th, at 12:00 p.m.
