Five Mavericks Record Multiple RBI as Softball Salvages Split With NYIT

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Apr. 25, 2015) – Powered by multi-RBI days from freshmen Melanie Palmieri (Staten Island, N.Y./Michael J. Petrides) and Morgan Lloyd (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme), sophomore Liza Ueno (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin), junior Amanda Gardiner (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) and senior Jackie Couillard (Wolcott, Conn./Wolcott) along with another strong pitching performance from sophomore Anna Cochis (Clifton Park, N.Y./Catholic Central), the Mercy College softball team concluded their ECC schedule with a doubleheader split at NYIT on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 12-3 decision in six innings in game one before taking a 12-1 victory in the nightcap.

The Mavericks (12-35, 10-18 ECC) split the season series with the Bears (28-20, 17-11 ECC) and conclude the season in fifth place in the ECC standings.

Game 1: NYIT 12, Mercy 3

The opener saw Mercy jump out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first as freshman Chelsea Konyar (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) scored off a Bear error. NYIT came right back though in the bottom half of the inning with three runs on three hits and a Mavericks error to take a 3-1 lead after one.

After a scoreless second inning, the Bears would add on to their lead with a two-run home run to build a 5-1 advantage after three innings.

Lloyd drove in her first run of the day in the top of the fourth to make it 5-2, but NYIT kept the bats going in their half of the inning with four runs on back-to-back home runs and an RBI triple to build a 9-2 lead.

Following both teams going down in order in the fifth, Lloyd would strike again with an RBI single to score Ueno to cut the deficit to 9-3.

However, the game would end via the run rule in the bottom of the sixth as the Bears connected on a three-run home run to make it 12-3.

Lloyd ended the opener 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Ueno went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Sophomore Jackie Kielty (Middleboro, Mass./Dean College) made the start in the circle and went the first two innings with three earned runs allowed to earn the loss.

Game 2: Mercy 12, NYIT 1

The nightcap saw Mercy have an offensive explosion as they recorded 12 runs on 13 hits with four different Mavericks recording multiple hits.

After a first inning to start the game, Mercy would bat around in the top of the second with seven runs scoring in the frame on seven hits. After a leadoff walk by Lloyd and singles from Gardiner and Adriana Bencomo (Fresno, Calif./Fresno City College) to load the bases, Palmieri delivered the first runs of the game with a grand slam for her first collegiate home run and give the Mavericks a 4-0 lead.

Ueno continued the scoring in the inning with an RBI double to score senior Angela Zayas (Livingston Manor, N.Y./Livingston Manor Central) before Couillard capped off the frame with a two-run home run to make it 7-0 after one and a half innings.

Cochis would put together another strong start for Mercy, tossing three consecutive scoreless innings to start the game and would receive more run support in the fourth as the Mavericks added five more runs in the inning to take a 12-0 lead. Mercy was aided by three NYIT errors but also received a walk with the bases loaded from Lloyd, two-RBI from Gardiner, an RBI single from Bencomo and an RBI double off the bat of Konyar to give Mercy a commanding lead.

The Bears scored their lone run of the game in the fourth, but Cochis would pitch a scoreless a fifth and secure the win for the Mavericks after five innings via the run rule.

Cochis went the distance with only the one earned run allowed on five hits to earn the win and improve to 6-9. Palmieri ended the game 2-for-3 with four RBI and a run scored, while Ueno concluded the nightcap 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Couillard went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI and Gardiner batted 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Bencomo went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Konyar hit 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks will conclude their 2015 season tomorrow with a home doubleheader against Goldey-Beacom starting at 1 pm.
