Young Drives In Two as Baseball Defeats Molloy 8-6 in Series Finale
Box Score UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Apr. 27, 2015)- Freshman John Young (New Hyde Park, N.Y. / Archbishop Molloy) drove in two runs and went 2-for-4 with a run scored as the Mercy College baseball team defeated the Lions of Molloy College, 8-6 on Monday afternoon.
Freshman Nick Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y. / North Shore) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Mavericks who improve to 12-25 overall and 6-14 in the East Coast Conference. Angelo Navetta recorded two RBI's for the Lions who fall to 20-20 overall and 8-12 in the ECC.
The Mavericks scored first in the top of the third as freshman Liam Slattery (Floral Park, N.Y. / Archbishop Molloy) doubled to score senior Joseph Gismondi (East Meadow, N.Y. / East Meadow), who singled through the right side to start the inning. Molloy rallied to take their first lead of the game in the fourth on triple to right center.
The Mavericks rebounded in the top half of the sixth as they scored four runs on two hits and two errors. Junior Justin Echevarria (Bronx, N.Y. / Orange CC) reached on a walk to begin the inning and then scored on two separate sacrifice bunts and a groundout to even the game at 2-2. Mercy regained the lead in the same inning as Slattery both reached and scored on an error. The Mavericks extended their lead to 5-2 after back-to-back doubles by senior Sal Palumbo (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) and Young.
The Mavericks took their largest lead of the afternoon at 8-2 as Daley scored on a passed ball in the seventh and both Young and Daley recorded RBI's in the eighth. The Lions attempted to salvage the game as they scored two runs in both the eighth and ninth innings. Senior Bryan Greig (New City, N.Y. / Clarkstown South) made a relief appearance, pitching the final 1 1/3 innings to preserve the victory for the Mavericks.
Junior James Patterson (Cornwall, N.Y. / Cornwall) struck out two batters in the 7.2 innings pitched and picked up the victory, while Bobby Kelly struck out five batters and took the loss.
Head Coach Jason Lamando will return to action on Friday, May 1st, hosting the Knights of Queens College in the series opener beginning at 3:00 p.m.
