DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 3, 2015)- The Mercy College baseball team dropped an East Coast Conference doubleheader to the Purple Knights of the University of Bridgeport on Friday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Purple Knights improve to 10-15 overall and 6-3 ECC, while the Mavericks fall to 5-16 overall and 1-9 in the ECC.

Game 1: Bridgeport 4, Mercy 0

The Mavericks only managed to produce three hits, as Bridgeport scored single runs in the second, fourth, fifth and eighth, respectively cruising to the 4-0 victory. The Mavericks best chance to score came in the bottom of the seventh, as senior Sal Palumbo (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) and junior Justin Palladino (Yonkers, N.Y. / Westchester C.C.) had back-to-back singles, but were left stranded to end the inning.

Anthony Alicki pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts to improve to 3-2, while sophomore Matt Nalbone (Islip, N.Y. / Islip) took the loss and falls to 1-4.

Game 2: Bridgeport 7, Mercy 6

Bridgeport had scored seven unanswered runs, when the Mavericks came to bat in the bottom of the third. Mercy got its first run of the afternoon when sophomore Bryan Gutierrez (Bronx, N.Y. / In-tech Academy) stole home after reaching base on a walk to start the inning.

The Mavericks rallied in the bottom of the fifth as they cut the Purple Knights lead to one at 7-6. Freshman Liam Slattery (Floral Park, N.Y. / Archbishop Molloy) led off the inning with a single and then stole second. Sophomore Michael Grudzinski (Islip, N.Y. / Islip) singled and then advanced to second on the throw, while Slattery crossed the plate on the throwing error as well. Junior James Patterson (Cornwall, N.Y. / Cornwall) reached first on a dropped ball by the catcher and sophomore Scott Hagan (Mamaroneck, N.Y. / SUNY Binghamton) reached on a walk to load the bases.

Palladino came to the plate next and smacked an RBI single to score Grudzinski. The bases remained loaded for freshman John Young (New Hyde Park, N.Y. / Archbishop Molloy), who would reach base on a fielder's choice allowing Hagan and Patterson to cross the dish on subsequent throwing errors. Senior Bryan Greig (New City, N.Y. / Clarkstown South) stepped to the plate next and reached on a RBI fielder's choice allowing Palladino to score.

Kevin Johnson came in for the Purple Knights to earn his second save of the season and to quiet the Mavericks bats late. Brian O'Keefe earned the win and improves to 2-1, while junior Christian Hock (Trumbull, Conn. / Franklin Pierce Univ.) took the loss and falls to 1-4.

Head Coach Jason Lamando and the Mavericks will return to action tomorrow, April 4, as they will travel to Bridgeport, Conn. to face the Purple Knights in the third game of the four games series. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
