ALBANY, N.Y. (Apr. 6, 2015) – Despite receiving an RBI from five different Mavericks, the Mercy College softball team dropped 7-1 and 7-4 decisions to the College of Saint Rose in a doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Cathy Haker Field.

The Mavericks (4-22) fail to build off their split against St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday, while the Golden Knights (10-13) snap their three-game losing streak.

Game 1: Saint Rose 7, Mercy 1

The opening game of the day saw Mercy get off to a quick start as senior Jackie Couillard (Wolcott, Conn./Wolcott) continued to swing a hot bat as she drove in sophomore Liza Ueno (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) with a single to second to give the Mavericks an early 1-0 lead.

However, Saint Rose responded in their first at bat with three runs in the bottom half of the inning on a groundout and two-run home run to take a 3-1 lead after one.

Mercy would not be able to get the offense going after the first as they were held to only three hits the rest of the game.

The Golden Knights added on to their lead with a single run in the third and fifth innings to take a 5-1 lead after five. A two-run sixth inning opened the game up and gave Saint Rose a 7-1 lead that proved too much for the Mavericks to overcome.

Couillard ended the opener 1-for-3 with an RBI, while sophomore Janelle Wade (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) went a perfect 2-for-2. Junior Alyssa Gutierrez recorded the Mavericks fourth hit and sophomore Amanda Graziano (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead) took the loss in the circle.

Game 2: Saint Rose 7, Mercy 4

The nightcap saw the Mercy bats come alive for nine hits and four runs, but the Mavericks were unable to contain a Saint Rose offense that smacked 14 hits and put up seven runs.

As was the case in the opener, Mercy got on the board first on an RBI single to right field off the bat of sophomore Aneecia Powell (Highland Mills, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. The Golden Knights ensued with a three-run inning on five hits and a Maverick error to take the lead 3-1 after two.

Mercy cut the deficit to one in the top of the fourth as a sacrifice fly by sophomore Katiana Golino (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) scored junior Amanda Gardiner (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) to make it 3-2. Saint Rose responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning to make it 4-2 after four innings of play.

The Mavericks inched closer in the sixth as freshman Morgan Lloyd (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) ripped a single to left field to score Couillard making it 4-3 heading to the Golden Knights home half of the sixth. Another three-run inning by Saint Rose gave them some cushion with a 7-3 lead heading into Mercy's final at bat.

An RBI single by freshman Melanie Palmieri (Staten Island, N.Y./Michael J. Petrides) in the seventh scored junior Milana Gilaga (Elmwood Park, N.J./Memorial) to get the Mavericks within 7-4, but Palmieri was thrown out at second on the play to end the threat and game.

Lloyd finished a perfect 2-for-2 with a run scored and RBI, while Gardiner went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Powell and Gilaga each ended up 1-for-3 with Powell recording an RBI and Palmieri batted 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore Anna Cochis (Clifton Park, N.Y./Catholic Central) took the loss for Mercy, going 4 2/3 innings with one earned run allowed.

Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks return to the field on Wednesday, April 8th with a doubleheader against NYIT at 2:30 p.m.
