Baseball Smacks Nine Hits in 6-2 Series Finale Victory Over Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Apr. 6, 2015)- The Mercy College baseball team smacked nine hits in a 6-2 series finale victory over the Purple Knights of the University of Bridgeport on Monday afternoon.

Senior Blake Hasbrouck (Middletown, N.Y. / Orange CC) went 2-for-2 with an RBI for the Mavericks that improve to 6-17 overall and 2-10 in the East Coast Conference. John Asceniza went 1-for-4 with an RBI for the Purple Knights who fall to 11-16 overall and 7-4 in the ECC.

All the scoring by both teams was done in the first fourth innings.

The Mavericks scored two runs in both the first and second innings. Sophomores Michael Grudzinski (Islip, N.Y./ Islip) and Justin Echevarria (Bronx, N.Y. / Orange CC) both scored on an error, after reaching on a walk to start the inning, to take a 2-0 lead. The Purple Knights cut the lead in half as Casey Ouelette doubled to start the home half of the first and then scored on Ascenzia RBI single.

Hasbrouck and freshman Liam Slattery (Floral Park, N.Y. / Archbishop Molloy) scored on unearned runs in the second to hold a 4-1 lead. The Mavericks picked up another run in the third, as senior Sal Palumbo (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) reached on a two out walk and was later drove in on a RBI single by Hasbrouck.

Mercy remained in control when Echevarria singled to score Grudzinski, who reached on an error by the third baseman to start the top of the fourth. Mercy held a 6-2 lead.

Senior Bryan Greig (New City, N.Y. / Clarkstown South) tossed seven strikeouts in 8.0 innings and only allowed one earned run as he improves to 2-3. Dave Egeland took the loss and falls to 0-5. Freshman Anthony Caminiti (Wantagh, N.Y. / St. Mary's) tossed 1.0 inning of hitless baseball to end the game.

Palumbo went 2-for-2 with a run scored and three walks, while Slattery went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Echevarria went 1-for-3 with two RBI's and a run scored.

Head Coach Jason Lamando will return to action on Thursday, April 9th, as will face the Chargers of Dominican College in a single game at Provident Bank Park in Pomona, N.Y. at 3:00 p.m.
