Baseball Outduels Dominican in Slugfest, 13-10
Box Score POMONA, N.Y. (Apr. 9, 2015) – The Mercy College baseball team earned its second win in a row with a 13-10 victory over Dominican College in a non-conference matchup on Thursday afternoon at Provident Bank Park.
Freshman Liam Slattery (Floral Park, N.Y. / Archbishop Molloy) went 3-for-4 with three RBI's for the Mavericks who improve to 7-17 overall. Robert Alonso went 4-for-6 with three RBI's and two runs scored for the Chargers who fall to 7-11.
Mercy manufactured 13 runs on 14 hits and drove in a season-tying 12 RBI's. The Mavericks took a 6-0 lead, as they scored runs in each of the three times they came to bat. Junior Scott Hagan (Mamaroneck, N.Y. / SUNY Binghamton), junior James Patterson (Cornwall, N.Y. / Cornwall), Slattery, senior Bryan Greig (New City, N.Y. / Clarkstown South), junior Justin Palladino (Yonkers, N.Y. / Westchester C.C.) and freshman John Young (New Hyde Park, N.Y. / Archbishop Molloy) all drove in runs in the first three innings.
The Mavericks increased their lead to 8-0 in the fifth inning as Young scored on an error, after being walked to get on base, and sophomore Michael Grudzinski (Islip, N.Y. /Islip) hit an RBI sacifice fly to score senior Blake Hasbrouck (Middletown, N.Y./ Orange C.C.)
The Chargers made up some ground by scoring eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but Mercy maintained a one run lead, after Slattery drove in his second run of the afternoon in the sixth. The Mavericks would put some breathing room between them and the Chargers, as Slattery, Young and Hasbrouck all drove in RBI's in the seventh to give Mercy a 13-8 lead.
Despite the Chargers getting two across the plate in the eigith, junior Blake Coalla (Wappingers Falls, N.Y. / Roy C Ketcham) recorded a save by getting out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth.
Every Maverick player accounted for at least one of the 14 hits, including senior Sal Palumbo (Medford, N.Y./ Patchogue-Medford) finishing 2-for-6 with two runs scored and Hagan going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Matt Nalbone (Islip, N.Y./ Islip) earned his second victory of the season, while Nathanial Popiel took the loss and falls to 1-3.
Head Coach Jason Lamando and the Mavericks will resume play tomorrow, Saturday, April 11th with a non-conference matchup against Nyack College at Nyack High School beginning at 3 p.m.
