Augustine Records Career Afternoon as Women's Lacrosse Grounds Owls of SCSU, 19-12

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 9, 2015)- Junior Nicole Augustine (Kingston, N.Y./ Kingston) posted a career-high nine points on a career-high seven goals and two assists, as the Mercy College women's lacrosse team defeated the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University, 19-12, in a non-conference clash on Thursday afternoon.

Senior Marissa Kluber (Wading River, N.Y. / Shoreham-Wading River) and freshman Grace Davidson (West Islip, N.Y. / West Islip) both netted a hat-trick for the Mavericks who improve to 5-7 overall. Emma Farrel scored four goals for the Owls who fall to 2-9 overall.

Augustine opened the scoring off an assist from redshirt senior Nicole Kline (Deer Park, N.Y. / Deer Park), but the Owls netted two in a row to take a 2-1 lead with 22:13 remaining. Mercy stretched their lead to 5-2 on scores by Augustine, Kline and Kluber.

The Owls regained the lead as they scored four unanswered goals to take a 6-5 advantage with 08:31 remaining. The Mavericks would ultimately hold the 9-7 lead at intermission as redshirt senior Meg McNally (Hillburn, N.Y. / Lock Haven Univ.) assisted on back-to-back scores by Davidson and Augustine, while sophomore Alexa Haines (Lindenhurst, N.Y. / Lindenhurst) netted her first goal.

In the second half, SCSU retook the lead by netting three goals to open the latter 30. Senior Keri Watson (Massapequa Park, N.Y. / Massapequa) propelled the Mavericks back into the advantage, as she scored off an assist from Davidson and a free position shot, to take a 12-10 lead with 24:21 left to play.

After the Owls scored to cut the lead to one at 12-11 with 21:34 remaining, the Mavericks preceded to score seven unanswered goals in the final 20 minutes to run away with the game as time expired.

Freshman Hope Coticchio (West Babylon, N.Y. / West Babylon) finished with four groundballs, two draw controls and two caused turnovers, while sophomore Melissa DellaRocca (Lindenhurst, N.Y. / Lindenhurst) finished with three groundballs and four caused turnovers. McNally added three groundballs, three draw controls and two caused turnovers, while Kline finished with seven draw controls.

Sophomore Jillian Rocco (Dix Hills, N.Y. / Half Hollow Hills East) and freshman Cara Moran (Tomkins Cove, N.Y. / North Rockland) both recorded three saves apiece in 30 minutes of work between the pipes. Moran took the victory and improves to 2-0. Nora Anderson made nine saves and falls to 2-8.

Head Coach Dawn Anselmin and the Mavericks will return to action in Philadelphia, Pa. on Saturday, Apr. 11th, taking on the Rams of Philadelphia University at 1:00 p.m.
