FLUSHING, N.Y. (May 2, 2015) – Despite RBIs from freshmen Liam Slattery (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and Tyler Cinelli (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) and junior Scott Hagan (Mamaroneck, N.Y./SUNY Binghamton), the Mercy College baseball team suffered 11-1 and 12-2 setbacks to Queens College in an ECC doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

The Mavericks (12-28, 6-17 ECC) have now dropped the first three games of the series, while the Knights (13-21, 9-14 ECC) win their fifth straight game with the sweep.

Game 1: Queens 11, Mercy 1

The first game of the afternoon saw the Knights offense explode for 11 runs on 13 hits, while also being helped by four Maverick errors.

After a pair of scoreless innings to start the contest, Queens got on the board in the third with an RBI single to center field from Kevin Kolesar to make it 1-0.

A run in the bottom of the fourth made it 2-0 in favor of the home team before a six-run fifth on four hits and two errors gave the Knights a commanding 8-0 lead after five innings.

Mercy got on the board in the seventh as Slattery hit an RBI single to right to bring home junior Justin Echevarria (Bronx, N.Y./Orange CC) and cut the deficit to 8-1.

Queens added on three runs in the eighth to build the advantage to 11-1 and would get a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth to secure the game one victory.

Slattery led the Mavericks with a 2-for-5 opener, while sophomore Marc Medico (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester) went 2-for-4. Senior Sal Palumbo (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) batted 1-for-4 and freshman Andrew Galgano (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Oyster Bay) went 1-for-1. Junior James Patterson (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall) made the start on the mound for Mercy and went five innings to earn the loss.

Game 2: Queens 12, Mercy 2

The nightcap saw a similar game unfold as the opener as Queens broke out with 12 runs on 11 hits, while the Mavericks committed five errors.

Mercy opened the scoring in the first with Hagan smacking an RBI double to left field to score sophomore Michael Grudzinski (Islip, N.Y./Islip) from first to make it 1-0.

However, the Knights carried over their hot hitting from the first game over to the second game and scored at least one run in five of their six at bats, including a five-run sixth.

Cinelli recorded his first collegiate RBI in the seventh on a single to score Slattery, but the deficit proved too much to overcome and gave Queens the sweep.

Hagan and freshman Nick Daley (Glenwood Landing, N.Y./North Shore) went 1-for-3, while Palumbo and Slattery each went 1-for-2. Senior Bryan Greig (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) made the start and went the first three innings with two earned runs allowed to take the loss and fall to 5-4 on the year.

Head Coach Jason Lamando and the Mavericks conclude their 2015 season with Senior Day tomorrow at home against Queens at 12 pm.
