Amell Makes Five Stops as Field Hockey Hosts Franklin Pierce
Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 12, 2015) – Freshman goalkeeper Julia Amell (Greene, N.Y./Greene) made five saves as the Mercy College field hockey team suffered a 1-0 setback to Franklin Pierce University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks fall to 0-3 on the year, while the Ravens remain perfect on the season at 4-0.
Junior Vanessa Soler (Port Monmouth, N.J./Middletown North) recorded a team-high two shots on goal, while junior Jackie Ballin (Cupertino, Calif./Cupertino) and freshman Micaela Belz (San Diego, Calif./Mount Carmel) each fired a shot on target.
Raegan Moulton scored the lone goal of the game for Franklin Pierce on four shots and Samantha Geils made four saves in earning the shutout victory.
The opening half saw the Ravens maintain possession in the Mavericks end of the field for most of the half, ending the period with a 12-3 edge in shots. However, neither team could find the back of the cage and the game remained scoreless heading into intermission.
Franklin Pierce came out in the second half on the offensive and would break the scoring drought in the contest in the 53rd minute as Moulton took a ball from in front of the cage and put it in the right corner to put the Ravens up 1-0.
The Mavericks would try to find the equalizer in the waning minutes of the game as Soler fired a shot with less than five minutes left, but Geils came up with the stop and the Ravens would hold on for the victory.
The visitors held a 24-8 edge in shots on the day and an 11-3 margin in penalty corners.
Head Coach Kayte Kinsley and the Mavericks return to action on Wednesday, September 16th as they host Southern New Hampshire at 4 p.m.
