Olson Nearly Records Double-Double as Volleyball Takes Down Nyack in Straight Sets

NYACK, N.Y. (Sept. 14, 2015) – Freshman Peyton Olson (Albany, Ore./West Albany) nearly recorded a double-double as the Mercy College volleyball team defeated Nyack College, 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-22) on Monday night at Bowman Gymnasium.

With the win the Mavericks improve to 3-5 and have won three of their last four matches, while the Warriors fall to 1-6 and have dropped three in a row.

Olson continued her strong play, finishing with a team-high nine kills and 16 digs, while sophomore Sa'Naya Johnson (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) added eight kills and four blocks. Junior Floriana Rraci (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) ended the match with a team-high-tying 16 digs and freshman Brianna Heffernan (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) concluded the evening with five kills and nine digs. Junior Michelle Luna (Costa Mesa, Calif./Costa Mesa) helped direct a Mavericks offense that hit .184 on the night with a team-high 16 assists.

Leading the home team was Lindsay Miller who finished with a match-high 13 kills and added five digs.

The opening set of the night saw Mercy hit a match-high .286, helping lead the way to a dominant 25-14 first set win to take an early 1-0 lead.

The Mavericks performed well offensively in the second set as well, hitting .226 with nine kills as they cruised to a 25-17 win to take a commanding 2-0 lead.

The closing set of the match saw Mercy finish the frame with only a .109 hitting percentage, but they were able to hang on and close out the match in straight sets with a 25-22 victory.

Mercy finished off the night with 28 kills and 62 digs compared to 27 kills and 60 digs for the Warriors, who hit .084 on the evening.

Head Coach Kelly Wengerter and the Mavericks look to continue their recent success as they head to Felician College on Thursday, September 17th for a 7 p.m. first serve.
